AWN Preview and Predictions: NCAA Division II Championships

For the last two seasons, Steve Costanzo’s St. Cloud State Huskies have been close. Very close. With senior leadership and a 47-match dual meet winning streak, the Huskies seem to have the right combination in order to bring home the school’s first wrestling national championship.

But last year, the depth of the field knocked down the Huskies to second. This year, the field is equally as deep, while defending Division II champion Nebraska-Kearney has added some extra pop to its lineup. Notre Dame College brings a wealth of experience from the NAIA level as the Falcons and head coach Frank Romano are wrestling in their first Division II championship. Continue reading at

Moorhead’s Vega To Face Notre Dame’s Miller in Opening Round of DII Nationals

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minnesota State University Moorhead junior Angel Vega will compete at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships starting Friday in Birmingham, Ala. It is the first trip to nationals for Vega.

Vega (25-13) will face Maurice Miller of Notre Dame (Ohio) in the opening round at 141 pounds on Friday. Miller is 27-4 on the year and won the Super Region 2 tournament at that weight class.

St. Cloud State Captures Third Consecutive Regional Title

Waterloo, Iowa – The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team captured its third consecutive NCAA Division II Super Region 3 championship on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa.

The Huskies posted 140.5 team points ahead of second place Upper Iowa with 95.5 points. SCSU captured four individual titles at the region tournament and will advance nine wrestlers to the upcoming NCAA Division II championships on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.

Mavericks Qualify Four for NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship

Waterloo, Iowa – Cody Quinn won the 165-lb weight class as No. 8 Minnesota State had four wrestlers punch their ticket to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship on Saturday, en route to a third-place finish with 84.5 points. Quinn, along with David Demo (125 lbs), Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs) and Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) all extended their seasons with their performances at Young Arena.

Three Vikings going to nationals, team finishes seventh at regional

WATERLOO, Iowa – Augustana placed seventh at the Super Regional Three Championship and qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA Championship Sunday.

The Vikings racked up 68.5 team points while St. Cloud State earned the regional title with 140.5 team points and Upper Iowa took second scoring 95.5 team points.
