All-American Ulmer Finishes Seventh at National Championships

KEARNEY, Neb. – As the second day of the NCAA Division-II National Wrestling Championships began, Corey Ulmer remained as the last Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon active. By day’s end, Ulmer would finish seventh and earn All-American honors in his junior season.

Ulmer, who went 2-1 on day one in the 125-pounds, opened up the second day with a rematch against Russell Weakley of North Carolina-Pembroke. Weakley used a trio of takedowns and a pair of reversals to push himself ahead of Ulmer who managed three escapes through out the match. Ulmer would have to battle one more time for seventh place against Jose Matos of Gannon University (Pa.).

Matos jumped ahead early with a takedown but Ulmer got back to his tough ground game and reversed Matos to end the opening period tied 2-2. In the second, Matos reversed Ulmer who responded with an escape. Down by one, Ulmer escaped and took down Matos to lead by two. Matos forced overtime with his second reversal late in the third period.

After a scoreless sudden victory overtime, Ulmer and Matos moved onto the tiebreaker round. Ulmer gained the escape he needed to put him over the top as he defeated Matos 7-6, earning seventh place and All-American status. Ulmer finishes the season 26-8 for the Dragons.
