Always have something that drives, motivates, or excites you. Until the end of time, have a reason to get up in the morning other than dragging your feet and dreading your existence – this type of mindset is an option we don’t have to choose. This message is for all of us. There are an unlimited amount of interests and influences for us to involve and immerse ourselves in. Figure out what your passions are and get involved and engaged in them. I have observed far too many people who are depressed, unenthused, and uninterested in anything that life has to offer. There is an endless buffet of opportunities for us and when we find our passion, it makes sense to give ourselves every opportunity to succeed in our enthusiasms.

At one time or another we have all asked the question “Is this worth it?” Generally this question is raised in times of frustration and doubt. I have been there, we all have. Yet, without hesitation I say: Yes, it’s worth it. Let me be clear, I am talking about the journey to reaching goals and the pursuit of distinction. This journey is a lot like going to school.

Students will be required to take classes that are boring to them with no perceived value. Yet, the classes are mandatory for graduation. This leaves two choices, they either do it or they don’t. If they don’t comply, their life choices are narrowed. So, what’s next? If they do comply, they progress, they graduate and they earn a diploma. It’s definitely worth it.

There’s no doubt that a paramount key to coaching and helping athletes to compete and exist to their greatest potential, is assisting them in managing their thoughts. While it can be good to go inside our thinking for awareness and reflection, to stay for too long is trouble. It is especially detrimental when it comes to competition. Thinking is almost like robbing a bank. You want to get in, take what you need quickly, then get out and don’t go back for awhile. If you stay too long in the bank of your mind, it’s dangerous. You will go to prison, a self-constructed prison.

If you only want to compete when you feel first-class, then you are in the wrong sport, unrealistic, and you belong on Gilligan’s island.
