SJU’s Becker Earns NWCA All-America Honor

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University senior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-America first team on Wednesday, April 8.

In previous seasons, the NWCA awarded All-America honors to the top eight wrestlers in each weight class at the NCAA Championships. This year’s All-America honors were split into three teams, based on each wrestler’s overall body of work through the regional tournaments and up to the national meet.

SJU’s Becker Hoping Injuries in the Past, Berth at Nationals in His Future

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No one wants to start their senior season sidelined by injury.

But Saint John’s senior wrestler Noah Becker is hoping the leg injury that kept him out of action early on actually represented a positive reversal of fortune.

“I’m thinking it may have worked out pretty well,” he said with a chuckle. “Hopefully, I got it out of the way now. Usually, I end up getting hurt at the end of the season.”

Indeed, injuries prior to the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional meet the past two seasons have likely kept the Browerville High School graduate from returning to nationals, after qualifying at 133 pounds as a freshman in 2017.

SJU’s SCHEELS Athlete of the Week: Noah Becker

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Senior wrestler Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) was named Saint John’s University’s SCHEELS Athlete of the Week on Monday, Jan. 6.

Becker handed No. 1/2 Victor Gliva (14-1 record) his first loss of the season with a 6-3 decision at 133 pounds in the Johnnies’ 47-3 loss to No. 3 Augsburg last Saturday (Jan. 4) in Minneapolis. Gliva is ranked No. 1 nationally in the rankings (Dec. 18) and No. 2 by the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA, Nov. 27).

Becker gained a 3-2 lead thanks to a late takedown with five seconds left in the first period. He was down to start the third period, tied at 3-3, and scored a reversal with 1:28 remaining and rode Gliva for the remainder of the match to earn the additional point.
