Nick Novak named 2023 NSIC Wrestler of the Year

NCAA Champion at 157 pounds went 27-0 while earning Super Region V title and First Team All-NSIC honors

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State Wrestling true sophomore and reigning NCAA Champion 157-pounder Nick Novak has been named the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Year following a historic second season with the Huskies.

Novak went a perfect 27-0 while earning both Super Region V and NCAA Championships at 157 pounds. The New Prague, Minnesota native added a 10-0 dual record to earn First Team All-NSIC honors while recording eight major decisions, three tech falls, and two pins over the course of his sophomore season. A force at his new weight class after moving up in December following an injury at the Huskies’ middleweights, Novak went 5-0 against ranked opponents, including three straight ranked wins over No. 2 Gabe Johnson, No. 12 Ben Durocher and No. 10 Miles Fitzgerald in early January. Novak’s key decision over Johnson was one of the most influential bouts in the 2023 NWCA National Duals Championship match as the Huskies earned the title with a thrilling 19-16 victory over No. 1 Central Oklahoma.

Dykes earns NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Southwest Minnesota State University’s Jacob Dykes has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week. The announcement came from the league office in Burnsville, Minn., on Monday afternoon.

Dykes, a junior 285-pounder from Iowa City, Iowa, won his lone match last week, defeating reigning NWCA Wrestler of the Year and National Champion Darrell Mason of Minnesota State, handing him his first career Division-II loss. Dykes scored a takedown in the first period and an escape in the third period to pick up the 3-1 win. The win improved him to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in NSIC duals this season.

Nick Novak named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

Huskies 157-pounder goes 4-0 with two wins over NCAA Qualifiers to earn first career honor

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State sophomore 157-pounder Nick Novak has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week by the conference office following his 4-0 weekend at the 2023 NWCA National Duals. The weekly honor is the first of Novak’s collegiate career.

Novak served a critical role in St. Cloud State’s National Duals Championship, going 4-0 at 157. The New Prague, Minnesota product earned three of his wins against All-Conference opponents, two against NCAA Qualifiers and two against wrestlers nationally ranked by the NWCA.

Steffen named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Southwest Minnesota State University’s Caden Steffen has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season. The announcement came from the league office in Burnsville, Minn., on Monday morning.

Steffen, a native of Zumbrota, Minn., went 5-0 this weekend, placing first at the Midwest Classic at 184 pounds. Steffen started his weekend with a fall (6:34) victory in the first round. He followed that with a technical fall (6:55, 18-3). In the quarterfinals, Steffen was matched up against No. 13 Cole Houser, and he defeated Houser by a 5-2 decision. Then, in the semifinals, Steffen defeated No. 7 Daniel Beemer by an 8-4 decision. In the finals, Steffen faced 15-1 Anthony Des Vigne, who Steffen defeated by a 3-2 decision to place first. Steffen is currently ranked No. 2 in the NWCA rankings at 184 pounds.

No. 2 SCSU Wrestling unanimous pick to win NSIC in Preseason Coaches’ Poll

11-time defending Northern Sun Champion has won 88 consecutive conference duals

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – No. 2 St. Cloud State Wrestling has been unanimously selected to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the 2022 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, earning all nine available first-place votes.

The Huskies have won the last 11 NSIC Championships while winning 88 consecutive conference duals dating back to 2011. Incredibly, St. Cloud State has not lost a home conference dual since February 14, 2010.

“With new faces in our lineup and some possible weight changes from our veteran wrestlers, we are excited for the challenge,” said head coach Steve Costanzo, “I am really excited to put the post-COVID era in the past and focus on what’s really important – the overall well-being of our student-athletes. This should be a very exciting season of collegiate wrestling for the Huskies.”

Turriff named NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year for Wrestling

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Minnesota State’s Trevor Turriff was voted by the league coaches as the NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year in wrestling. A native of De Pere, Wisconsin, Turriff is a red-shirt senior majoring in business while holding a 3.79 cumulative grade point average.

The “NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year Award” is presented to an NSIC Wrestling student-athlete who participates at their institution for four years and is academically superior while making a positive contribution to their team and the University. The NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year award was initiated in 2020-21 to honor an outstanding senior that exemplifies the attributes of the model NSIC student-athlete.
