Thirteen Huskies earn NWCA Scholar All-America honors

MANHEIM, PA. – The St. Cloud State University wrestling team has had plenty to celebrate this 2020-21 season. The athletics department and a handful of wrestlers will need to make more room in their trophy cases after the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announcement, as 13 Huskies and the team earned Scholar All-America honors Monday afternoon.

Teacher named NWCA DII Wrestler of the Year

MANHEIM, PA. – There were very few things St. Cloud State University wrestler Kameron Teacher (Columbus, Ohio / Central Crossing) did not accomplish during the 2020-21 season. The senior was crowned a national champion, not once but twice, and earned All-America, All-Conference, and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Wrestler of the Year honors. On Monday, Teacher received the highest honor of them all, as he was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Wrestler of the Year.

NWCA Division III Coaches Association Set to Host National Championships in Coralville, Iowa, March 12-13

Manheim, PA – On Thursday, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced the creation of the NWCA Division III Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships presented by ARMS Software, FloWrestling, and Reese’s. The Xtream Arena (Coralville, IA) will play host on March 12-13 and will be allowing spectators. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday, February 26th at 10:00am through the Xtream Arena Box Office. Tickets may be purchased by visiting xtreamarena.com. All-session and single-day tickets will be available for $41 and $24, respectively. Fans not able to attend will be able to watch each match live on FloWrestling.

On February 3, the NCAA announced the cancellation of the Division III winter championships for wrestling as well as basketball, indoor track and field, swimming and diving, and ice hockey. Following the NCAA’s announcement, the NWCA Division III Leadership Group, led by Chairman Lonnie Morris, Head Coach at Johnson & Wales, began working to provide a championship experience for athletes who had just had their championship tournament canceled for the second year in a row. Morris shared, “It is an honor to be part of the leadership group that helped create this opportunity for our student-athletes.”

Huskies’ Bianchini named NWCA Division II Rookie of the Year

St. Cloud State University redshirt freshman Joseph Bianchini (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Immaculate Conception H.S.) has been named as the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Rookie Wrestler of the Year for the 2019-20 season. He was joined in the NWCA honors court by Central Oklahoma’s Heath Gray, who was named the NWCA DII Wrestler of the Year.

“We are proud to honor two very deserving athletes on their outstanding achievements during the 2020 season. They were each selected from a group of highly decorated athletes and should be proud of the manner in which they represented their institutions,” said Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director.

NWCA Division I Coaches Group Announces 2020 All-America Teams

Manheim, PA – The National Wrestling Coaches Association has announced the 2020 Division I All-American teams. Each year the NWCA recognizes the outstanding work of the DI Student-Athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements in the national championship, however, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the championships were canceled.

All-American honors were based on each wrestler’s overall body of work through the conference tournaments and up to the national championships.

SCSU wrestlers honored this year include sophomore Garrett Vos (Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia H.S.) at 133-pounds, freshman Joey Bianchini (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Immaculate Conception H.S.) at 141-pounds, senior James Pleski (Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake H.S.) at 149-pounds, junior Jake Barzowski (Park Ridge, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) at 157-pounds, junior Devin FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn./H.S.) at 165-pounds, senior Kolton Eischens (Pierz, Minn./Healy H.S.) at 174-pounds, senior Tyree Overton (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island H.S.) at 184-pounds and sophomore Noah Ryan (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville H.S.) at 197-pounds.

Eight Augsburg men’s wrestlers named to NWCA D-III All-America First Team

MINNEAPOLIS — Eight members of the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team were named as first-team NCAA Division III All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced on Tuesday.

Named as NWCA All-Americans were: Victor Gliva (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) at 133 pounds, David Flynn (SR, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) at 141, Aaron Wilson (SR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) at 149, Ryan Epps (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS) at 157, Lucas Jeske (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) at 165, Solomon Nielsen (JR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) at 174, Tanner Vassar (SR, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) at 184 and Lance Benick (JR, Scandia, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) at 197.

All eight Auggies were named to the 80-member NWCA All-America First Team, with eight individuals named in each weight class. All 80 were among the top eight seeds in each weight class that were scheduled to wrestle at the NCAA Division III National Championships in March, an event that was canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. An additional 50 wrestlers were named to the NWCA All-America Second Team, and 50 more were named to the NWCA All-America Third Team. Traditionally, the top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-America honors at NCAA wrestling championships.
