Rau goes big, Clark shuts out competition as MTC takes two Greco titles in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada — The move up two weight classes has paid off big for Joe Rau. A move West to Hawaii has seemed to work for veteran Jake Clark.

Rau, Speiller put on show as six Greco-Roman champions crowned at U.S. Nationals/Trials Qualifier

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Hitting a five-point throw in the first period, then a pair of clutch two-point exposures late in the match, Joe Rau of the Minnesota Storm knocked off three-time U.S. World Team member Caylor Williams in an entertaining finals at 98 kg/215 lbs. at the U.S. Nationals/Trials Qualifier in Greco-Roman.

Rau nailed a back arch on the edge of the mat for five points to lead 5-0 at the break. Williams came back strong early in the second period, to score six straight points for a 6-5 lead. Initially, officials gave Williams four points, but he protested the call, and one of his two-point moves was changed to a four-point throw.

Late in the period, Rau got a pair of exposures for four more points, reclaiming the lead at 9-6. He was able to hold off Williams as time ran out, and he captured his first national title. Rau was a member of the 2014 U.S. World Team at 80 kg, but has moved back up in weight this year. Continue reading at www.teamusa.org

Gopher alums prepare for U.S. Senior Nationals

Many of the best American wrestlers in the sport today will be on the mat at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday and Saturday with the goal of earning a spot in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trails next April in Iowa City. Among that field will be nine Gopher alums, three of whom will wrestle Greco on Friday and the rest in freestyle, which will take place on Saturday.

The icebreaker for Minnesota’s Greco contingent will be Pat Smith, who will wrestle at 66 kilograms and be the first Gopher to compete on Friday. Smith won gold at last April’s Pan America Championships and finished as the runner-up at the World Team Trials in June, both at 71 kilograms. Shortly after Smith, Dylan Ness and Alec Ortiz will kick off their tournaments in the 75-kilogram, Greco field. In his international debut, Ness went 3-2 wrestling at 66 kilograms at the Bill Farrell International Open last month. Continue reading

Greco-Roman preview for Olympic Team Trials Qualifier and U.S. Nationals in Vegas

Minnesota Storm Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete this weekend in Las Vegas at a U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifying event. The top seven finishers in each weight class will punch their tickets to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City in April.

Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson, Jared Lawrence and company have put together one of the top private training centers in the country with the PINnacle School of Wrestling. Paulson runs Greco-Roman senior-level practices out of PINnacle, located in Shoreview, to help prep the Storm and MTC competitors for international competition. Continue reading at www.mtcstorm.com

Up to 126 spots in Olympic Trials up for grabs at U.S. Senior Nationals/Trials Qualifier in Las Vegas, Nev. Dec. 18-19

The largest Olympic Trials qualifying event will be held this week, as the U.S. Senior Nationals and Trials Qualifier, will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, December 18-19.

Up to 126 spots are up for grabs for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10, easily making this the largest qualifying event in the #Road2IowaCity series of events.

Competition will be in the 18 Olympic weight classes, six weight classes in each of the three Olympic styles. The top seven placewinners in each weight class will qualify to compete in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10. Continue reading

Freestyle preview for Olympic Team Trials Qualifier and U.S. Nationals in Vegas

Minnesota Storm freestyle wrestlers will compete this weekend in Las Vegas at a U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifying event. The top seven finishers in each weight class will punch their tickets to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City in April.

Heading into this Olympic season, Marty Morgan, whose name is synonymous with wrestling success in Minnesota, returned to senior-level coaching for the Storm. His presence is a big addition to the Storm’s growing freestyle team. Coach Jared Lawrence and Morgan have collaborated this season to prepare their athletes for the road ahead. Storm wrestlers begin Olympic season with competitions around the world

Wrestlers for the Minnesota Storm will begin their 2015-2016 competitive season jetting around the world for training and competition. Storm athletes will look to build on Andy Bisek’s bronze medal performance at the 2015 World Championships that capped a successful end to last season.
