The story behind the NYWA wrestling tournament

March 29-April 1 will mark the 17th year of the Northland Youth Wrestling Association’s (NYWA) state folk style tournament. The Mayo Civic Center’s Taylor Arena will again be the site of all the exciting action over a four-day period starting this Thursday. Time to hit the mat at MW

WORTHINGTON — Death and taxes are presumably the only certainties in life, but with a Worthington January comes another certainty: a giant wrestling open at Minnesota West for college freshmen and sophomore wrestlers in the area.

For the last 21 years, MW has hosted the Worthington Open, which has brought the likes of Tolly Thompson, Damion Hahn, Luke Becker, Jayson Ness, Jake Dietchler, Justin Ruiz and Brock Lesnar to its mats in past years just to name a few. Apple Valley Captures 4th Team Title of Season

This past weekend the Apple Valley Youth Wrestling Club captured their 4th team title of the season at the 2012 Stillwater Pony Stampede in Stillwater, MN. The 16 team individual team tournament was hosted at the Stillwater Area High School. The event recognized the top 6 individuals in each weight class and Apple Valley was able to place a winner in the top 6 of each weight class for the tournament. Continue reading at

New Prague Youth Wrestling hosts “Doc Berg Classic” Tournament

Youth wrestlers from throughout the state will converge on New Prague High School Saturday January 7th, 2012 to compete and attempt to qualify for the MN/USA State Folkstyle Tournament. The 35th Annual Tournament has been recently christened the “Doc Berg Classic” in honor of Dr. John and Ann Berg, Dr. Mark and Julie Berg and their family’s involvement in the event.

Fredy Stroker entered Saturday’s InterMat JJ Classic on ranked among the nation’s top 20 freshmen before ever donning a high school wrestling singlet.

The 15-year-old Stroker, who attends Bettendorf High School in Iowa, showed why he is so highly regarded by defeating three state placewinners, including a Cadet National finalist and a two-time state champion, en route to capturing the JJ Classic title at 113 pounds. Continue reading at
