Fighting For The Kids – Travis Hoffarth and Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus

By Brian Jerzak

When Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus head wrestling coach Travis Hoffarth took over the Roadcrew's head job, he did so with hall-of-fame mentors to back him up. All three of his varsity high school coaches from Albany are in their sports' Minnesota coaching halls of fame. Even though he didn't always listen to them when he competed for them, how he approaches dealing with his wrestlers now proves he listened when it counted.

"It is all about fighting for the kids," Hoffarth said, "making sure they know you are going to do anything you can."

The Roadcrew coach has been involved in wrestling his entire life.

"Wrestling has been part of our family since I have known. My uncles wrestled. My dad wrestled for part of his high school career. My brother (Brad) is ten years older than I am. He was a wrestler. He was the key for me – showing me the moves in the living room when I was four or five years old. He became a head coach at Osakis, the athletic director, and now is the high school principal."

With a future wrestling coach learning his craft in the living room teaching his younger brother, the younger Hoffarth had an advantage early.

Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew advance to state after claiming Section 8-2A title

THIEF RIVER FALLS — The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew are heading back to the state wrestling tournament after defeating the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels 36-23 in the Section 8-2A title match Friday, Feb. 17, in Thief River Falls.

It’s the second trip to state in three years for the Road Crew, who were seeded No. 2 in the East division while D-W-F was the No. 2 seed in the West. PL/PR-B advances to the Class 2A state quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Road Crew aims to continue wrestling success

The Road Crew was 28-2 last season with three state qualifiers

PINE RIVER — The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history last winter when they finished 28-2 overall. And now the Road Crew start over with three state qualifiers and a total of 18 letterwinners, on their roster.

“We had an outstanding season last year, maybe our best of all-time if you look at team stats and individual accolades,” said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth, whose team is scheduled to open the season by hosting Deer River and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at PR-B Thursday, Dec. 1. “And yet we fell just a bit short of our ultimate goal of a team section title and state tournament appearance. So our mind set from day one of this season will be ‘we haven’t accomplished anything if we are still talking about last season.’ “

Hoffarth believes his squad does have a “chip on its shoulder” this season.

“We will have to count on a lot of kids to produce on a consistent basis at the varsity level, but I look forward to their continued growth,” he said. “At the same time we have a really strong core of experienced varsity wrestlers who will put points up on the board.” Continue reading at pineandlakes.com →
