Building on ‘X’-perience

Demonstrating ‘true grit’ of its own last winter, the Pipestone Area wrestling team is confident it can use the inspiring campaign to springboard into the 2023-24 season.

The Arrow faithful were quick to jump on the wagon in support of, then seventh grader, Miklo Hernandez, and join in on the comeback road of junior Hudson Burnett and another tournament run by classmate Brayden Burmeister. The trio not only paced the Arrows to a 10-10 record in the ever-tightening Big South Conference, but also ended their individual campaigns on the biggest of stages in Minnesota – the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Hernandez capped his initial foray into the varsity arena with a runner-up finish at the state tournament at 106 pounds. Burmeister claimed his first Section 3A crown at 120 pounds, securing his second straight state tournament berth, while Burnett returned to the ‘show’ after winning a state title in 2020-21 and missing the 2021-22 postseason, following a serious automobile accident.
