Jackson’s rebirth

There’s not much Jim Jackson does on any given day that doesn’t draw criticism from someone, somewhere.

Those critics have followed Jackson throughout his coaching career, including his latest and likely last job at Shakopee High School, where he took over in 2015.

But, despite all the harsh words typed on wrestling message boards, Jackson has had a wildly successful career, and that fact can’t be argued by even his worst critics.

Jackson was the longtime coach at Apple Valley, taking over an already successful program and pushing it to new heights. He compiled a 618-27-3 record at Valley, helping the Eagles win two national titles and 14 team state titles before retiring in 2012. Continue reading at www.postbulletin.com

Lloyd Versus Robb

A championship match and a friendship years in the making

By Brian Jerzak

Shakopee’s Alex Lloyd and Owatonna’s Peyton Robb have come full circle. As the clock wound down in the 145AAA individual finals, Robb held a one-point lead over Lloyd. With under a minute to go in the third, Lloyd hit a takedown and was able to ride out Robb for the final few seconds to win the title. For both juniors, the match was bittersweet. After the referee had put Lloyd’s hand in the air, both wrestlers embraced in the center of the Xcel Energy Center – possibly for the last time in competition.

The first time they wrestled each other they were in elementary school. It would become the first of many times the two would lock horns in competition and in the practice room. Shortly after their first meeting, they would become training partners and best friends.

“The first time I met him it was at an elementary school tournament,” Robb said. “He won a one-point match.”

By Brian Jerzak

Apple Valley – What a way to start the high school wrestling season. When the clock hit double zeros, and Apple Valley’s Tanyi Besong completed his 3-1 victory, the scoreboard read Shakopee 29 Apple Valley 28. For the first time in ten years, the Apple Valley Eagles’ wrestling team came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard against a team from Minnesota. It was the first time since 1991 that the Eagles lost a conference dual meet.

I don’t know how long ago wrestling programs must have their schedules set, but kudos to the Apple Valley Eagles and Shakopee Sabers for putting on an outstanding show and for jumping right into the season with a number one versus number two match up. The gym was packed with wrestling fans from around the area. In addition to Apple Valley and Shakopee fans, I spotted an Owatonna shirt and Farmington shirt in the stands, and I am sure there were, even more, communities represented.
