Jacks return home to face rival Bison

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State wrestling team returns to Frost Arena for the final homestand of the season as the team hosts North Dakota State Friday at 7 p.m. in Western Wrestling Conference action.

Aaron Pickrel leads the Jackrabbits with a 2-1 WWC record and a 24-8 overall record. Pickrel notched four-straight wins at the North Country Open last week to win the 125-pound weight division. Pickrel is 5-0 in falls with the quickest in one minute three seconds. He will not compete Friday against NDSU due to injury. 

This week’s Competition

North Dakota State Bison – North Dakota State enters the weekend 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the WWC. The Bison dropped a dual against Air Force 22-19 and no. 25 Wyoming 35-3 in their last conference action.

Trent Sprenkle, ranked no. 19 by Intermat and no. 22 by the NCAA owns a 26-7 record, including 3-1 in the WWC. Sprenkle lost his first conference bout to no. 18 Michael Martinez of Wyoming Jan. 30, but he won seven of his last eight matches. The sophomore lost only two of 11 dual matches on the season so far.

Vince Salminen, ranked no. 18 by Intermat and the NCAA, is 31-5 on the season and 4-0 in the WWC. The 157-pounder was the lone Bison to tally a win against no. 25 Wyoming in NDSU’s last conference matchup. The senior has won seven of his last eight bouts and has only three dual losses.

The Jacks are 19-34-1 against the Bison all time.

Jacks by numbers – The 11 grapplers on the probable lineup for the matchup against NDSU own 59 wins on the season with 126 bout losses.

As a team, the Jacks won 35 matches by fall with the two quickest falls in 32 seconds (Joe Brewster) and 34 seconds (Cord Willers).

David Michaud and Dustin Walraven claim the most wins by fall, both with a 6-0 falls record. Aaron Pickrel follows with a 5-0 falls record.

The Jacks have 68 wins by decision, 20 wins by major decision and six wins by technical fall.

Pickrel leads as Jacks fall 38-6

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Aaron Pickrel put the only points on the board as the South Dakota State wrestling team fell 38-6 to Air Force in Western Wrestling Conference action in Colorado Springs, Colo. Saturday night.

Pickrel didn’t even make it through the first period before he pinned Falcon 125-pounder Tyler Spangler at two minutes 45 seconds. The win is Pickrel’s sixth win by fall on the season. He improves to 20-8 on the season and 2-1 in the WWC.

The Jackrabbits, open at 133 pounds, dropped three matches by decision, three more by major decision, one by technical fall and one by fall.

The Jacks, now 1-11-1 overall and 0-4 in the WWC, are back in action Feb. 11 when they host WWC opponent North Dakota State at 7 p.m. in Frost Arena.

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The South Dakota State wrestling team fell 49-0 to no. 21 Wyoming Friday in Laramie, Wyo.

The Jackrabbits, now 1-10-1 on the season and 0-3 in the Western Wrestling Conference, return to the mat tomorrow when they face Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. Action is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. MT.

Wrestling Graduate Assistant Position

GRADUATE ASSISTANT: South Dakota State University is accepting applications for a wrestling graduate assistant. Responsibilities include working with all aspects of the wrestling program. In addition to a monthly stipend, 2/3 of tuition is waived. Cowboys and Falcons await Jackrabbits

The South Dakota State wrestling team hits the road for two more Western Wrestling Conference matches as they travel to Wyoming Friday and Air Force Saturday.

“Wyoming has a very good program right now with a lot of depth and it’s going to be a difficult road trip,” said head coach Jason Liles. “Air Force beat Arizona State a week or so ago, which surprised me but shows they have a lot of balance.”

Aaron Pickrel leads the Jackrabbits with a 6-2 duals record and an 19-7 overall record. Pickrel notched his 19th win against Northern Colrado last week with a win by forfeit. Five of Pickrel’s wins were by fall with the fastest in one minute three seconds.

Nick Flynn, Kevin Kelly and David Michaud come in second for the Jacks with four dual wins this season. Six of Michaud’s eight wins on the season were by fall, with the remaining wins by decsion.

The probable lineup for the Jacks against Wyoming and Air Force includes: Pickrel (125 pounds), open at 133 pounds, Tyler Johnson (141 pounds), Jimmy Hamilton (149 pounds), Andrew Youngblom (149 pounds), Flynn (157 pounds), Rex Lyon (157 pounds), Joe Rasmussen (165 pounds), John Nething II (165 pounds), Michaud (174 pounds), Cord Willers (184 pounds), open at 197 pounds and Kelly (285 pounds).

Wyoming Cowboys
 – Wyoming enters the matchup Friday ranked no. 21 by Intermat and no. 25 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Cowboys own a 7-4 record and a 1-0 record in the Western Wrestling Conference. The Cowboys defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines 23-15 last week in WWC action.

The Cowboys boast four wrestlers ranked by Intermat in no. four Shane Onufer (165 pounds), no. five Joe LeBlanc (184 pounds), no. 18 Michael Martinez (125 pounds) and no. 18 Cole Dallaserra (149 pounds).

LeBlanc, a two-time All-American, was named the WWC Wrestler of the Year last season following a first-place finish at the NCAA West Regional and a fourth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships at 184 pounds. The junior became the first freshman All-American at Wyoming two seasons ago after placing fifth at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

Martinez and Onufer both placed first in their respective weight classes at the West Regional last season, while Dallaserra placed fourth.

Last season, the Jacks fell to the Cowboys 34-9 and have yet to win a dual against Wyoming with an 0-11 record all-time.

Air Force Falcons – Air Force enters the weekend with a 8-2 duals record a ranked no. 45 by Intermat. The Falcons open their conference schedule when they host North Dakota State Friday before going head-to-head with the Jacks.

The Falcons claim one wrestler ranked by Intermat in no. 10 sophomore Cole VonOhlen at 141 pounds. VonOhlen placed second at the 2010 West Regional and ended his freshman season at the NCAA Championshisp. VonOhlen was named WWC Freshman of the Year last season for his performance on the mat during his debut season.

Last season the Jacks dropped the dual against Air Force 23-12 and are 1-6 against the Falcons all-time.

Last week – The Jackrabbit grapplers battled the Northern Colorado Bears to a 26-21 loss last week in Frost Arena.

Nick Flynn drew the first blood at 157 pounds with his decision win over Tanner Weiks, but it was David Michaud who highlighted the night with his win by fall over Cody McAninch in two minutes 48 seconds.

The pin marked Michaud’s sixth on the season. He improved his record to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the WWC.

The dual, which started at the 141-pound weight class, ended with three-straight forfeits. Kevin Kelly and Aaron Pickrel each picked up wins by forfeit to give the Jacks a temporary 21-20 lead, but an SDSU forfeit at 133 pounds put the Bears just over the top for the 26-21 victory.

Next up – The Jacks take next week off, but host WWC member North Dakota State Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in Frost Arena. The regular season wraps up the following week when Utah Valley visits Frost Arena.

Jacks battle Bears to 26-21 loss

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State wrestling team battled to a 21-20 lead but Western Wrestling Conference foe Northern Colorado proved too much for the Jackrabbits as the Bears handed the Jacks a 26-21 loss Friday night in Frost Arena.

David Michaud made the match of the night as the 174-pounder defeated Cody McAninch by fall in just two minutes 48 seconds. Michaud notched a takedown 41 seconds into the first period before pinning his opponent. The pin is Michaud’s sixth on the season. He improves to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in WWC action.

Nick Flynn, a 157-pounder, picked up a win for the Jacks with a decision over Tanner Weiks. Flynn put points on the board early with a takedown in the first period. Weiks followed it up with an escape to end the first period 2-1. A Weiks escape in the second period tied the score but Flynn managed an escape with 40 seconds to go in the match for the 3-2 win. Flynn moves to 9-12 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The dual, which started at the 141-pound weight class, ended with three-straight forfeits. Kevin Kelly (Hwt.) and Aaron Pickrel (125 pounds) each picked up wins by forfeit to give the Jacks a 21-20 lead, but an SDSU forfeit at 133 pounds put the Bears just over the top with 26-21.

The Jacks, now 1-9-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference, head to Wyoming Jan. 28 and Air Force Jan. 29. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time and 7:05 p.m. MT, respectively.
