Jackrabbits notch 40-4 win over Augustana

South Dakota State recorded pins in each of the first two matches, setting the tone for the Jackrabbits’ 40-4 victory over Augustana in the wrestling dual opener for both squads Friday night at Frost Arena.

Tanner Jordan trailed in his 125-pound match against Jaxson Rohman, 4-2, after one period, but Jordan got on track in the second period by recording a takedown off a neutral start and putting Rohman’s shoulders to the mat with eight seconds remaining in the stanza.

Freshman Caleb Thoennes, who was making his collegiate debut in Friday’s match, followed with a second period of his own against Christian Olsen for a quick 12-0 SDSU lead.

Jacks Host Two Wrestling Events This Weekend

The South Dakota State wrestling team opens the home portion of its schedule by hosting a pair of events this weekend at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits kick off dual action Friday night by hosting Augustana. Start time is set for 7 p.m. SDSU posted a 13-4 dual record during the 2021-22 campaign, including opening the season with a 34-10 home victory over Augustana.

Sunday, the Jackrabbits return to tournament competition as Frost Arena will be the site of the multi-team Daktronics Open. About 150 wrestlers from regional schools, including Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa are slated to wrestle in the day-long event, which begins at 9 a.m.

Top 25 sees little movement in Division I’s second full week of competition

Manheim, Pennsylvania ā€“ There was minimal movement inside the Top 25 as the NWCA released its latest Division I Coaches Poll on Tuesday.

Arizona State (1-0) returned to the top five, while Oklahoma State (2-0) made a move into the No. 10 spot after a pair of weekend wins in the Keystone State.

Top-ranked Penn State opened its season with a 44-3 win over Lock Haven, while second-ranked Iowa welcomed Division Iā€™s newest member, California Baptist, to Carver-Hawkeye with a 42-3 win.

McConville leads Jacks at Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. ā€” Bowen McConville reached the finals of the heavyweight division and 12 other South Dakota State wrestlers earned top-six placings Saturday at the season-opening Bison Open.

A senior from Renton, Washington, McConville went 2-1 on the day, starting with a 22-4 technical fall over Owen McGillivray from the University of Saskatchewan.

Both of McConville’s last two matches went to overtime. He recorded a 3-1 sudden victory over Keaton Kluever of Minnesota in the semifinals but dropped a 3-2 decision to North Dakota State’s Juan Mora in the first overtime tiebreaker.

SDSU starts season at Bison Open

The South Dakota State wrestling team will kick off its 2022-23 season Saturday by competing at the Bison Open.

Action begins at 9 a.m. at Scheels Center on the North Dakota State University campus. About 15 Jackrabbits are entered in the day-long tournament, including several who will be making their collegiate debuts.

SDSU posted a 13-4 dual record last season and finished sixth at the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championship. The Jackrabbits sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
