Metz Takes Final Bout as NDSU Keeps Border Bell Trophy with 19-18 Win at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Heavyweight Brandon Metz won the final bout and North Dakota State claimed its seventh straight dual win defeating South Dakota State 19-18 in a Big 12 Conference dual on Friday, Feb. 21, in Frost Arena.

NDSU (10-3, 6-1 #Big12WR) wrestles at No. 19-ranked Iowa State (9-4, 6-1 #Big12WR) at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, in Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State travels to No. 24 Missouri on Saturday.

South Dakota State (12-6, 6-3 #Big12WR) trailed 16-6 before reeling off three straight wins – a major decision by Tanner Cook at 174 pounds, a tech fall from No. 15 Zach Carlson at 184 and slim 3-2 decision by No. 12 Tanner Cook — to take an 18-16 heading into the final match of the evening.

Regular season closes with Border Bell dual

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Two wrestling squads with long dual winning streaks will clash Friday night as South Dakota State hosts North Dakota State in the Jackrabbits’ regular-season finale.

The annual Border Bell matchup is set for a 7 p.m. start at Frost Arena. The six members of the Jackrabbit senior class will be honored prior to Friday’s dual.

Fans attending the dual will receive a commemorative glass. Tickets can be be ordered in advance online at The arena ticket booth opens at 6 p.m. Friday.

Sloan honored by Big 12

IRVING, Texas – South Dakota State 197-pounder Tanner Sloan was honored Tuesday as Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week after helping lead the Jackrabbits to a pair of home dual victories.

A redshirt freshman from Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan opened the weekend with a 9-0 major decision over Fresno State’s Dominic Kincaid on Feb. 15. The next night, Sloan knocked off 13th-ranked Nathan Traxler of Stanford by a 7-2 decision.

Iowa remains unanimous No. 1 heading into final week of Division I regular season

Manheim, Pennsylvania — After completing the 2019-20 Big Ten regular season unbeaten, Iowa remains the unanimous No. 1 in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. Heading into the final week of the regular season, Iowa (12-0) is one of two unbeaten teams left in Division I. Third-ranked NC State (14-0) is the other.

The top-ranked Hawkeyes finished 9-0 in the Big Ten and closed out its conference slate with a 35-6 win over rival Minnesota on Saturday in front of over 12,000 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With one home dual left, the Hawkeyes have drawn over 10,000 fans in all seven home duals this season. It’s expected to be eight after No. 9 Oklahoma State (13-2) comes to visit on Sunday evening. Speaking of big crowds, second-ranked Penn State saw 15,995 witness its 20-16 win over No. 6 Ohio State at the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday night. The crowd was Penn State’s third highest all-time and the fifth-highest to witness a dual meet in NCAA history.
