Mustangs finish 2-0 on weekend with dual victory over Dragons

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (2-3, 2-2 NSIC) finished the weekend 2-0 with a 24-15 victory over MSU Moorhead (0-3, 0-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in Nemzek Hall.

This was the first back-to-back conference victories for the Mustangs since the 2016-17 season when the Mustangs defeated Minot State and UMary.

The Mustangs started the dual off with a 6-0 lead as Justin Sampson (141) earned a victory by fall at 6:32 over MSUM’s Mason Schultz.

SMSU Opens 2019-20 Home Dual Season With First Conference Victory Over NO. 17 NSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-3, 1-2 NSIC) opened the home season of 2019-20 earning an 18-14 victory over No. 17 Northern State (5-3, 1-2 NSIC) in the PE Gym on Friday night, the first conference victory this season for the Mustangs.

The Wolves were slated at No. 17 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), released on Jan. 1.

SMSU earned six bout victories in the dual and opened back-to-back victories as Hunter Pfantz (125) and Jackson Stauffacher (133) both claimed victories by decision.

SMSU ready for split weekend hosting NSU and traveling to MSUM

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-3, 0-2 NSIC) prepares to host the first conference dual of the 2019-20 season on Friday versus Northern State at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.

SMSU splits weekend play after hosting Northern State on Friday, the Mustangs travel to Moorhead to face the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Nemzek Hall.

Augsburg 26 Southwest Minnesota State 12

Auggies top Mustangs 26-12

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming victories in six out of 10 bouts, including two pins and a technical fall, the No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team claimed a 26-12 dual meet victory over NCAA Division II opponent Southwest Minnesota State University.

At 125 pounds, Augsburg’s Justin Stauffacher (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) used a big four-point nearfall in the third period to post a 6-4 decision and improve his record to 7-2 on the season.

At 133 pounds, No. 2 ranked Victor Gliva (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 8-0 on the season claiming a second-period technical fall. He scored two 4-point nearfalls in the first period in addition to three takedowns and a 2 point nearfall.
