MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (3-6, 2-4 NSIC) fell to No. 17 Minnesota State (7-1, 3-0 NSIC), 31-8, on Thursday night in the PE Gym.

SMSU claimed two bout victories in the dual, the first a win by tech fall at 133 as Jackson Stauffacher defeated MSU’s Cole Gille.

SMSU welcomes No. 17 MSU in Thursday dual

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (3-5, 2-3 NSIC), coming off a 1-2 weekend after falling to NSIC-opponent, Augustana on Friday and going 1-1 at the York College/Northeast Oklahoma/Southwest Minnesota State Triangular in York, Neb., on Saturday, is set to host No. 17 Minnesota State (6-1, 2-0 NSIC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym, rescheduled from Jan. 18.

Mustangs go 1-1 in Saturday duals

YORK, Neb. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (3-5, 2-3 NSIC) finished 1-1 on the day at the York College/Northeast Oklahoma/Southwest Minnesota State Triangular in York, Neb., on Saturday.

The Mustangs fell to Northeast Oklahoma 25-17 to open the day, before earning a 47-6 victory over York College.

Hunter Pfantz (125), Hayden Voxland (174), and Jackson Ryan (197) were the lone Mustangs to earn back-to-back bout victories on the day.

Augustana 27 Southwest Minnesota State 10

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team rattled off its sixth-consecutive dual victory Friday night in the Elmen Center. The Vikings defeated the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State 27-10 and moved to 6-2 on the season, 6-0 against Division II competition and 3-0 in NSIC duals.

Redshirt freshman Kolby Kost started the night with a come-from-behind victory at 184 pounds. Kost was down 6-2 late in the third period, before recording two takedowns and logging four near-fall points. Kost went on to win the bout 10-6 and put the Vikings up 3-0.

Redshirt freshman Steven Hajas recorded the next win for the Vikings at 285 pounds in a 6-2 decision to even the match score at 6-6. Redshirt freshman and No. 9 ranked Jack Huffman recorded a comeback win of his own at 133 pounds. Huffman trailed 4-3 late in the third period, before taking a shot and nearly pinning his opponent. Huffman was awarded a takedown and four near-fall points in his fourth-straight individual win and Augustana trailed just 10-9.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday, March 13 & 14, 2020, at NCAA.com/tickets. The championships are co-hosted by Augustana University and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority.

Single-session and all-session tickets are available, with affordable options for all ages. Fans interested in premium seating options should contact the KELOLAND Box Office located in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Discounted tickets are also available to groups purchasing at least 10 tickets.

SMSU prepares for busy weekend facing NSIC and nonconference opponents

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (2-3, 2-2 NSIC) is set to compete in a busy weekend with a conference dual at Augustana on Friday at 7 p.m. and traveling to non-conference duals in York, Neb., on Saturday.

SMSU travels to Augustana for a 7 p.m. conference dual on Friday before a weekend competing at the North Country Open beginning at 9 a.m. in Collegeville, Minn., and traveling to York, Neb., for a split dual facing Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and York College (Neb.) at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

#17 Mavericks to wrestle rescheduled SMSU dual on Jan. 30

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 17 Minnesota State wrestling team is scheduled to travel to Marshall, Minn., to face the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs for an NSIC dual on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m.

The conference dual, which will take place inside the PE Gym, was previously scheduled for Jan. 18, but inclement weather postponed the dual.

The Mavericks hold a 4-1 record and will be traveling to North Dakota for a pair of duals this weekend. Friday’s dual against University of Mary (2-4, 0-1 NSIC) is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., while Saturday’s dual with Minot State (4-3, 1-1 NSIC) is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
