Mustangs set for Super Regionals

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team (4-7 overall, 2-7 NSIC) is set to travel to Minot, N.D., to take place in the NCAA Super Region V Championships on Saturday, with the meet scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Region V comprises the 10 NSIC wrestling programs, as well as Upper Iowa.

The top three placers at each weight class will earn a spot at the NCAA DII National Championships in Park City, Kan., on March 15-16.

Mustangs overcome early deficit to take down Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs defeated the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Thursday evening by a final score of 30-20. This win brings the Mustangs to 4-7 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC, while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-12 overall and 0-9 in the NSIC.

The dual began with a pair of forfeits, with Jacob Dykes winning by forfeit at 285, while USF won 125 by forfeit.

133 pounds saw USF’s Beau Klingensmith win by technical fall and USF’s Beau Beavers won at 141 by fall.

Steffen ranked third, Mustangs and Dykes fall out of NWCA Rankings

MANHEIM, Pa. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team has fallen out of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Poll released on Monday. SMSU is currently receiving votes.

Caden Steffen leads the Mustangs, ranking third at 197, trailing only Central Oklahoma’s Dalton Abney, who is a two-time national champion at 197, and Derek Blubaugh (Indianapolis), who has placed second at 197 each of the last two years. Steffen has earned victories over St. Cloud State’s No. 4 Dominic Murphy (Dec 4-2), Augustana’s No. 6 Max Ramberg (Dec 9-6), UMary’s No. 7 Matt Kaylor (SV 4-1) Nebraska-Kearney’s No. 10 Jackson Kinsella (SV 4-1) and Fort Hays State’s No. 11 Tereus Henry (Dec 10-4).

Bronchos hold top spot in DII Men’s Coaches Poll heading into postseason

MANHEIM, Pa. – Heading into the 2024 postseason, the Central Oklahoma Bronchos are still the top team in NCAA Division II men’s wrestling, according to the latest edition of the National Wrestling Coaches Association DII Men’s poll, released Monday afternoon.

UCO topped the poll with 87 total points behind a poll-high eight ranked wrestlers. The Bronchos, along with #2 Lander, also feature a poll-high two top-ranked wrestlers in defending National Champions Dalton Abney at 197 and Shawn Streck at 285. Lander comes in at #2 with 80 total points and seven ranked wrestlers, highlighted by James Joplin (125) and David Hunsberger (165) at #1 in their respective weight classes.

Augustana made the jump from #14 to #3 in this edition of the poll, amassing 67 total points behind seven ranked individuals. St. Cloud State is in the four-spot with 57 points, with UW-Parkside and McKendree tied in the fifth spot with 48 team points each.

Northern State 25, Southwest Minnesota State 14

Mustangs honor seniors, but fall to Wolves

MARSHALL, MINN. – The 25th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs fell to the 18th-ranked Northern State University Wolves on Friday evening by a score of 25-14. This loss brings the Mustangs to 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the NSIC, while the Wolves move to 8-12 and 3-5 in the NSIC.

Carlo Arreola started off the meet strong for the Mustangs, after a slow first three periods, the 125 lbs match headed to overtime. In overtime, Arreola was able to secure a takedown in the first overtime period to win by 4-1 sudden victory.

Northern State picked up victories at 133 by tech, at 141 by major decision, and at 149 by decision.
