SMSU to host NSU in its final home dual

MARSHALL Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-2, 1-2 NSIC) will return to action Thursday night in its last home dual, facing Northern State (3-0, 3-0 NSIC), the “extra” matches beginning at 6 p.m. with the official NSIC matches starting at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.

SMSU leads the all-time series at 29-10-3, in a series started in the 1979-80. SMSU is 4-1 in the last five matches with the Wolves last victory coming in the 2018-19 season.

Augustana 29 Southwest Minnesota State 12

Vikings Win Big at SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Augustana wrestling team moved to 2-2 on the season Thursday night with a convincing 29-12 dual victory over Southwest Minnesota State. The Vikings defeated the Mustangs in seven of the 10 matches.

After a forfeit in the 125 pound bout, senior Brandon Carroll wasted no time in evening up the dual score with a pin over his opponent halfway through the second period of the 133 pound match. Tied 6-6, sophomore Jack Huffman took the mat at 141 pounds and delivered a 7-2 victory in which he recorded three takedowns and a riding time point.

With Augustana up 9-6, sophomore and No. 9-ranked, Hunter Burnett suited up in the 149 pound bout and delivered a monster performance. Burnett recorded six takedowns, eight points from near-falls, an escape and a stall warning point for a 22-4 tech fall and 14-6 Viking lead.

Mustangs to host Augustana on Thursday

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-1, 1-1 NSIC) continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action this Thursday hosting Augustana University (1-2, 1-2 NSIC) inside the PE Gym starting at 6 p.m. The teams will have six “extra” bouts starting at 6 p.m., followed by the official NSIC match at approximately 7 p.m.

Augustana leads the all-time series 30-5 and has won the last six matches, including 27-10 last season in Sioux Falls, S.D. … SMSU’s last victory in the series came on Jan. 14, 2014, in Sioux Falls … SMSU won four of six matches from 1992-1998, but Augustana has won 19 of the last 20 since the 1999-2000 season.

NWCA NCAA DII Rankings – January 22, 2021

Manheim, PA – Defending National Champion St. Cloud State remains atop the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Coaches Rankings. In the first regular season poll of the year, released by the association Friday, the Huskies amassed 107 points to stay in the number one spot with Nebraska-Kearney (85 points) and Central Oklahoma (75 points) rounding out the Nation’s top three teams.

Lindenwood remains in the four spot with 72 points, with Gannon breaking into the top five in this edition of the poll. McKendree dropped to the sixth spot while Indianapolis broke into the top ten joining West Liberty in a tie for the seven spot with 41 points. Division II’s #9 & #10 ranked teams stayed the same with Ashland and Adams State closing out the top ten.

SMSU back in action taking on University of Wisconsin Parkside

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-0, 1-0 NSIC) returns to action this Friday traveling to Kenosha Wis., going up against University of Wisconsin Parkside (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) in its second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual this season. The dual is slated to start at 8 p.m. in the De Simone Gym.

SERIES HISTORY: The series is held by Parkside with a 2-0 lead over SMSU, the first time the two wrestling programs met up was on Nov. 6, 2001, in Kenosha Wis., where SMSU lost 33-12. The next time these two would meet up wouldn’t be for another 16 years, where they met at a neutral site in Mankato Minn., on Jan. 6, 2018, where again Parkside defeated the Mustangs 32-12.
