Vikings Knock Off No. 24 SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 17 Augustana wrestling team earned their second ranked road victory of the season on Friday night, knocking off No. 24 Southwest Minnesota State 24-13 inside PE Gym.

The Vikings move to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action, while the Mustangs fall to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in NSIC duals.

Jaxson Rohman got the ball rolling at 125 points in dominant fashion. After a scoreless first period, Rohman collected an escape, takedown, and stall point to take a 5-0 lead into the third period. He added a takedown and riding point in the third period en route to a major victory, giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead.

SMSU Announces 2024 Signing Class

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head wrestling coach Chayse Jackson recently announced eight high school student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their academic and wrestling careers at SMSU.

Joining the program for the 2024-25 season include high school seniors Devin Carter from Walnut Grove, Minn., Tate Condezo from Marshall, Minn., Gavin Lambert from Hastings, Minn., Dylan Louwagie from Marshall, Minn., Zach Pittman from Grand Island, Neb., Ethan Sylvester from Minneapolis, Minn., Jacob Taplin from Osakis, Minn., and Noah Torgerson from St. Michael, Minn.

“This year’s class is an excellent group of student-athletes. These individuals not only excel on the mat, but in the classroom and their community,” Jackson said. “We are truly excited to welcome these guys to SMSU and expect many of them to make an impact on our lineup and program immediately. The local connections will be great for our community, while those from farther away bring a much needed outside perspective. Look for this class to go down in SMSU’s history books 4-5 years from now!”

SMSU opens home NSIC schedule vs No. 9 Augustana on Friday night

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (2-2, 0-2 NSIC) will host the Augustana Vikings (6-4 overall, 1-1 NSIC), for an NSIC dual meet on Friday night, with the dual scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs entered the NWCA Top 25 in the latest rankings, coming in at No. 24 on the team rankings. SMSU also remained at No. 25 in the team tournament rankings in the Open Mat rankings.

SMSU to host Military Appreciation Night on Friday for NSIC home opener

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Department will be hosting Military Appreciation Night during the Mustangs NSIC dual versus Augustana on Friday, Jan. 12, inside the PE Gym starting at 7 p.m.

As a show of support from SMSU, all military personnel—active, retired or reserve—will receive a free general admission ticket to the match with identification or proof of service.

Mustangs, Steffen and Dykes recognized in latest rankings

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team is ranked in both the latest Open Mat and NWCA rankings. Caden Steffen and Jacob Dykes have also been ranked in each of the latest rankings.

SMSU remained at No. 25 in the Open Mat Team Tournament rankings released on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The Mustangs are one of six NSIC teams ranked in the top 25, alongside No. 4 St. Cloud State, No. 7 UW-Parkside, No. 8 Northern State, No. 16 Augustana, and No. 21 UMary.

SMSU entered the NWCA team rankings released Friday, Dec. 22, coming in at No. 24. The NWCA rankings are based off of a tournament format. SMSU is alongside five other NSIC teams in the Top 25, No. 4 UW-Parkside, No. 6 St. Cloud State, No. 15 UMary, No. 17 Augustana and No. 18 Northern State.
