Injured Mustangs struggle against No. 10 Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – The No. 22 ranked Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team fell to the No. 10 ranked Upper Iowa Peacocks inside Dorman Gymnasium by a final score of 41-0 on Sunday.

The Mustangs were dealing with injuries, giving up forfeit victories at 125 pounds and 141 pounds. No. 2 Caden Steffen did not participate in the dual after suffering an injury in yesterday’s dual against Parkside.

Carter Marx wrestled No. 9 Dalton Hahn down to the wire, securing a pair of escapes but falling by decision with a final score of 3-2.

Mustangs suffer setback against No. 7 Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. – The No. 22 ranked Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team fell to the No. 7 ranked Wisconsin-Parkside inside De Simone Arena by a final score of 34-9.

Elijah Sterner had a dual to remember as he picked up his first dual victory with a 7-4 decision over Crosby Schlosser.

Carter Marx continued his strong performance in conference duals, picking up a 3-1 sudden victory in the first overtime period. With the win, Marx is up to 3-1 in conference duals.

Dykes enters NWCA Rankings, Steffen remains #2, Mustangs up to #22

MANHEIM, Pa. – After returning to action against Minnesota State this past weekend, the Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team is ranked No. 22 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Poll released on Friday.

SMSU is one of seven NSIC schools ranked in the NWCA Top 25, with St. Cloud State leading the way, claiming the No. 5 spot in the rankings, Parkside comes in at No. 7, Upper Iowa lands at No. 10, Augustana and UMary are tied at 14, while Northern State placed at No. 20.

NWCA NCAA DII Rankings – January 20, 2023

MANHEIM, PA – The Central Oklahoma Bronchos stayed atop the NCAA Division II wrestling rankings, in the latest edition of the NWCA Division II Coaches Poll, released Jan. 20 by the Association.

The Bronchos held at number one, but a new team is on their heels, with Lander jumping from four to the two spot with 66 points. Nebraska-Kearney moved to No. 3 with 63 points, followed by West Liberty (58 pts.) and St. Cloud State (56 pts.) rounding out the nation’s top five teams.

All 10 of UCO’s starters are nationally ranked, highlighted by Dalton Abney (197) and Shawn Streck (285) both in the two-spot in their respective weight classes. St. Cloud State has seven ranked wrestlers, headlined by Abner Romero in the top spot at 174. Lander, UW-Parkside, and Augustana all have six ranked individuals.

Mustangs hit the road to face two top 10 teams

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-2, 1-2 NSIC) returns to the road, traveling for a match at Parkside (4-0, 2-0 NSIC) in Kenosha, Wis., on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m., before heading to Fayette, Iowa, to face Upper Iowa (6-2, 2-0 NSIC) for a dual on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m.

MUSTANGS IN THE RANKINGS: SMSU has one wrestler ranked in the NWCA rankings (Dec. 23). Caden Steffen ranks second at 184 pounds. Steffen is 16-1 on the season and 3-0 in duals. Steffen was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season after placing first at the Midwest Classic. Steffen picked up victories over three of the NWCA top 10 at the Midwest Classic, No. 9 Cole Houser, No. 6 Daniel Beemer and No.4 Anthony Des Vigne. His only loss this season was a 3-2 decision to Billy Higgins, who is currently ranked first at 184 pounds. … SMSU has also been recognized for its team success, as the NWCA ranks the Mustangs at No. 24.
