Auggies top Mustangs 26-12

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming victories in six out of 10 bouts, including two pins and a technical fall, the No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team claimed a 26-12 dual meet victory over NCAA Division II opponent Southwest Minnesota State University.

At 125 pounds, Augsburg’s Justin Stauffacher (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) used a big four-point nearfall in the third period to post a 6-4 decision and improve his record to 7-2 on the season.

At 133 pounds, No. 2 ranked Victor Gliva (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 8-0 on the season claiming a second-period technical fall. He scored two 4-point nearfalls in the first period in addition to three takedowns and a 2 point nearfall.

Upper Iowa 28 Southwest Minnesota State 6

No. 6 Peacocks pull away from Mustangs in dual victory

FAYETTE, Iowa – The comeback efforts of the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) were not enough for No. 6 Upper Iowa (3-0, 3-0 NSIC) as the Peacocks pulled away mid-dual to claim a 28-6 victory on Thursday night at Dorman Gymnasium.

The Mustangs dropped the first two bouts before Justin Sampson earned a 3-2 decision victory over UIU’s Ryan Schmalen. Robert Shields (149) then piggy-backed off the momentum to earn the back-to-back decision victory with a 4-2 edge over UIU’s Chance Throndson, to tie the dual at 6-6.

SMSU returns to NSIC Play and travel to DIII defending national champion, Augsburg, in back-to-back duals

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will return to NSIC play with a conference dual at No. 6 Upper Iowa (2-0, 2-0 NSIC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Dorman Gymnasium, before heading to defending national champion, Augsburg University, on Friday for a non-conference dual at 7 p.m. in Si Melby Hall.

Thursday’s dual against Upper Iowa is the first conference dual for the Mustangs since a 42-0 loss to NSIC-powerhouse, St. Cloud State, on Nov. 20.

Mustang Wrestling closes successful day at Buena Vista Open

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-1, 0-1 NSIC) competed in the fourth open of the season to place six wrestlers as Robert Shields and Jackson Ryan led the way as consolation champions at 149 and 197, on Saturday afternoon.

Hunter Pfantz and Brock Buysse both placed at 133 as both went 2-2 to take home seventh and eighth place.
