MSU-Mankato 31 Southwest Minnesota State 6

Mankato, Minn. – The No. 8 Minnesota State Mavericks completed the home portion of their schedule on Thursday night as they defeated the visiting Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 31-6 on Senior Night at Bresnan Arena.

Senior Andy Forstner’s (No. 4, 125-lbs) final home match wasn’t a long one as he jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a takedown at the :30 mark before pinning Travis Borchert four seconds later (:34) to earn his second win by fall of the season and give the Mavericks an early 6-0 lead.
Fellow senior Ben Becker (No. 6, 174-lbs) also made the most of his final home match earning a 12-2 major decision win over Zach Coates. Despite leading just 2-0 after the first period, Becker would record four takedowns in the matches final two periods and earn 3:35 of riding time en route to victory.
Junior Aaron Norgren (No. 6, 184-lbs) earned a win by sudden victory over CD Johnson giving him four consecutive wins. Norgren earned a two-point takedown with just eight seconds remaining in sudden victory for a 6-4 win.
Breaking his two-match losing streak was the No. 7 ranked junior Pat Mahan. Mahan would go on to earn two three-point near-falls and two two-point near-falls before defeating Martin Hagen by a 15-0 technical fall at the 5:28 mark.
Four other wrestlers would go on to earn wins for the Mavericks as sophomore Robby Fisher (141-lbs) won a 4-2 decision, sophomore Jesse Westphal(149-lbs) won a 2-1 decision, junior John Makabe (157-lbs) won an 8-5 decision, and freshman Brendan Eichmann (165-lbs) won a 19-9 major decision.
With the win the Mavericks improve to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The loss drops the Mustangs to 5-4-1 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC.
The Mavericks will close out their regular season next week as they travel to St. Cloud State to take on the No. 3 ranked Huskies. The dual is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 17.

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (5-3-1, 1-3 NSIC) will hit the road for its first road NSIC dual of the season. The Mustangs are set to take on No. 8 Minnesota State (8-4, 4-1 NSIC) on Thursday, Feb. 10 with action beginning at 7 p.m. at Bresnan Arena in Mankato. SMSU will return home on Friday for its final home dual of the season against Buena Vista (Iowa) (4-8, 2-7 IIAC) at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.

Four straight: CD Johnson (184 pounds) continues to roll picking up his 21st win of the season last Saturday against Kody Kalkbrenner of Minnesota State Moorhead. Johnson picked up a 10-2 major decision over Kalkbrenner, earning his fourth straight NSIC victory.

Three of the four wins came by major decisions. Johnson’s streak started with a 15-0 major decision over No. 5 Mic Berg (St. Cloud State). The senior then went on to win a 10-2 major decision over Mark Mueller (Upper Iowa), 6-4 decision over Tom Davies (Augustana) and a 10-2 major decision over Kalkbrenner (MSUM). The win over Kalkbrenner extended Johnson’s season record to 22-11. Johnson set a new career-high for wins (previously 19).

Rodas rules: Junior Brian Rodas (285 pounds) lost his first match of the season last Saturday, falling to Jon Swart (MSU Moorhead). Swart needed an extra session to defeat Rodas 2-1. Rodas was unbeaten in four previous matches. The junior has won three of his four bouts by fall this season.

The reign of Reinsma: Redshirt freshman Justin Reinsma (133 pounds) enters the weekend with a 21-10 record. After two consecutive losses, to ranked opponents, Reinsma snapped back to earn a 2-1 victory over Evan Forde (MSUM). Reinsma’s win pushed the Mustangs lead to 15-10 as SMSU went on to win the dual 18-16.

20-plus club: CD Johnson and Justin Reinsma were the first two Mustangs this season to reach the 20-win plateau. Johnson currently owns a record of 22-11 while Reinsma sits at 21-10.

Mavericks at a glance:
 The Mavericks are coming off two consecutive losses to the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. Last Friday, Minnesota State hosted No. 1 Nebraska-Omaha and lost that dual 22-12 after owning an early 9-3 lead. Just a weekend earlier the Mavericks squared off with No. 2 Augustana College and lost that dual 21-10. Minnesota State has three wrestlers currently ranked in their respective weight classes. Andy Forstner is ranked fourth at 125 pounds. Aaron Norgren (184 pounds) and Ben Becker (174 pounds) are each ranked sixth in their weight class.

Results vs. the Mavericks:
 Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State first met during the 1980-81 season. The Mavericks lead the all-time series 21-8, and have won the last 19 meetings between the two schools. Last season, SMSU led the Mavericks 15-11 at home before winning the dual’s final three bouts to top SMSU 22-15 in Marshall.

Beavers at a glance: Buena Vista hosted a double-header last weekend against Northwestern College (Iowa) and Morningside College. The Beavers started off the night with a 32-22 win over Northwestern before falling 40-9 to Morninside. Buena Vista had lost four straight duals before beating Northwestern last Thursday. Buena Vista has two wrestlers ranked in the Division III individual rankings. Austin Mogg is currently ranked second at 125 pounds and Brian Broll ranks sixth in the 197-pound weight class.

Results vs. the Beavers:
 SMSU and Buena Vista have competed in duals since the 1969-70 season. Buena Vista currently owns the lead in the all-time series (20-6-1). The Mustangs won the last meeting between the two schools on Jan. 30, 2010. SMSU defeated the Beavers 41-3 in Storm Lake, Iowa, winning nine out of 10 bouts.

North Country Open

Southwest Minnesota State 18 MSU-Moorhead 16

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team won its first NSIC dual of the season this afternoon by defeating No. 20 Minnesota State University Moorhead 18-16. The win marks SMSU’s first win over MSU Moorhead since the 2000-01 season.

The Mustangs and the Dragons each earned five individual wins but SMSU’s major decisions from Zach Coates and CD Johnson led SMSU to victory. The win was SMSU’s first NSIC dual victory since Feb. 13, 2010 when SMSU defeated U-Mary 25-15.

The Dragons would get on the scoreboard first when Tyler Kivel defeated SMSU’s Billy Fate in a 4-2 decision to give MSU Moorhead an early 3-0 lead. The Mustangs would fire right back in the 174-pound bout when Zach Coates earned a 11-1 major decision over Trent Sovde. SMSU took a one-point 4-3 lead over the Dragons.

CD Johnson won his fourth straight NSIC match of the season when he picked up a 10-2 major decision over Kody Kalkbrenner. Johnson has not lost a match with a conference opponent so far this season.

SMSU’s Martin Hagen would help the Mustangs extend the lead to 12-3 earning an 11-2 major decision over Brian Woelfel in the 197-pound bout. The Dragons would cut SMSU’s lead in half (12-6) when Jon Swart earned a 2-1 decision over Brian Rodas in an extra session in the heavyweight bout. The Mustangs had won three straight bouts before Swart defeated Rodas.

The Dragons would continue to cut into SMSU’s lead when Cory Ulmer, who is ranked No. 6 in the NCAA at 125 pounds, earned an 11-3 major decision over Travis Borchert.

The Mustangs would get back on the board and take a five-point lead at 15-10 when Justin Reinsma earned a 2-1 decision over Evan Forde. The Dragons would bounce right back in the 149-pound bout where Tyler Steinwand earned a tight 5-4 decision over Demond Carter. SMSU took an 18-13 lead into the final bout of the dual.

Tallen Wald defeated SMSU’s Casey Field in the 157-pound match in a 3-0 decision to make the final score 18-16 in SMSU’s favor.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC action next Thursday when they travel to Mankato, Minn. to take on Minnesota State in a dual beginning at 7 p.m.

Augustana 27, Southwest Minnesota State 6

MARSHALL, Minn. – No. 2 Augustana won seven straight contests and jumped ahead to a 23-0 lead before defeating Southwest Minnesota State 27-6 Friday evening in Marshall, Minn.

The win was Augustana’s seventh straight and moves the Vikings to 13-1 (6-0 NSIC). SMSU falls to 4-3 (0-3 NSIC).

The Vikings are the lone team left in the NSIC with no conference losses.

At 125 pounds, Al Meger got action underway with a 13-1 major decision victory over Travis Borchert.

Jason Jeremiason needed an overtime period to get a 3-1 win via sudden victory over Justin Reinsma at 133 pounds.

No. 4 Jay Sherer brought Augustana’s lead to 10-0, defeating Ethan Hildebrandt 6-1 at 141 pounds.

At 149 pounds, No. 6-ranked Nate Herda lengthened the Vikings advantage to 13-0 with a 3-1 victory over Demond Carter. He also needed the overtime period to notch the victory.

No. 3 Marcus Edgington was victorious in his 157-pound tilt, while No. 4 Gavin Nelson used a 20-7 win by major decision at 165 pounds to stretch Augustana’s lead to 20-0.

Carl Serck, ranked No. 7 in Division II, checked in with a 9-6 victory over Zach Coates at 174 pounds.

The Mustangs picked up their first win of the dual 184 pound as CD Johnson beat Tom Davies 6-4.

No. 2 Ty Copsey answered for the Vikings with a 14-5 win by major decision against Martin Hagen at 197 pounds.

SMSU’s Brian Rodas closed the dual by defeating Lance Peters 3-1.

Augustana will host Upper Iowa next Friday at 7 p.m.

Mustangs Welcome Two Ranked Opponents in NSIC Duals

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team will put an end to its four-match homestand this weekend hosting two ranked opponents in No. 2 Augustana College and No. 20 Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Mustangs will dual the Vikings at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 before welcoming the Dragons at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Veteran presence:
 CD Johnson (184 pounds) continues to roll picking up his 20th win of the season last Friday against Upper Iowa’s Mark Mueller. Johnson earned a 10-2 major decision over Mueller. Before the dual with Upper Iowa the Mustangs squared off with No. 3 St. Cloud State where Johnson earned a 15-0 technical fall over No. 5 Mic Berg. The senior stretched his season record to 20-11 on the season.

Rodas rules:
 Junior Brian Rodas (285 pounds) earned his fourth consecutive victory of the season—third by fall—when he pinned Upper Iowa’s Arron Cramer 35 seconds into the bout last Friday night. Roads’ only other bout of the season was a 5-1 decision over St. Cloud State’s Chris Brassell.

 Redshirt freshman Justin Reinsma (133 pounds) enters the weekend with a 20-9 record. Reinsma is coming off two losses, his last coming against Kyle Pedretti of Upper Iowa who is ranked second at 133 pounds in the NCAA. Reinsma has recorded seven pins on the season to go along with one technical fall, two major decisions and 10 decisions.

Vikings at a glance:
 Augustana College enters the weekend ranked No. 2 in the NWCA Top 25 Poll and atop the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings with an overall record of 11-0, and 5-0 in conference play. The Vikings have won five straight duals since losing to then No. 1 ranked Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 9.

Augustana has six wrestlers ranked individually in the NWCA poll. Jay Sherer is ranked No. 4 at 141 pounds, Nate Herda, eighth at 149 pounds, Marcus Edingtion, second at 157 pounds, Gavin Nelson, sixth at 165 pounds, Carl Serck, sixth at 174 pounds and Ty Copsey, second at 197 pounds, all ranked in the top eight of their weight class in the latest edition of the NWCA coaches poll.

 The Mustangs and the Vikings first met during the 1982-83 season. Augustana currently leads the all-time series 21-4. The Mustangs have lost 10 straight duals against Augustana.

Dragons at a glance: MSU Moorhead, ranked No. 20 in the country enters the weekend with an overall record of 4-6. The Dragons are 1-3 in conference duals this season. MSU Moorhead will play host to border rival Concordia Moorhead tonight in a non-conference dual. The Dragons have two individuals ranked in the top eight in their particular weight classes. Corey Ulmer is ranked sixth at 125 pounds and Brady Schneeberger is ranked third at 141 pounds.

Results vs. the Dragons:
 Southwest Minnesota State owns a 24-17 all-time record against MSU Moorhead. The two teams first met during the 1983-84 season. The Mustangs have lost nine straight duals to the Dragons. Last season, the Dragons defeated SMSU 32-6 in a dual in Moorhead.

SMSU’s Ethan Hildebrandt (141 pounds) almost had a pin early in the first period against Upper Iowa’s Victor Coronado earning three points with a nearfall. Hildebrandt led 5-0 heading into the second period. He went on to pick up a 6-1 decision improving his record to 15-7 on the season.

CD Johnson stretched his season record to 20-11 earning a 10-2 major decision over No. 5 Mark Mueller in the 184-pound bout. Martin Hagen followed that bout at 197 pounds and fell in a 9-3 decision to Carl Broghammer, which stretched the Peacocks lead to 24-7.

Brian Rodas made quick work of Arron Cramer at the 285-pound weight class. Rodas pinned Cramer just 35 seconds into the first period. Upper Iowa would go on to win the dual 24-13.

Upper Iowa 24 Southwest Minnesota State 13

Mustangs Fall 24-13 Against No. 10 Upper Iowa in NSIC Dual

MARSHALL, Minn. – No. 10 Upper Iowa University won six out of 10 bouts tonight at the PE Gym to defeat Southwest Minnesota State University 24-13 in an NSIC dual in Marshall. The Peacocks improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC while SMSU falls to 4-2-1 and 0-2 in the NSIC.

The dual started at 125 pounds where Upper Iowa’s Trevor Frankling (No. 3 NCAA) defeated SMSU’s Travis Borchert in an 8-2 decision. Justin Reinsma squared off with Kyle Pedretti who is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA at 131 pounds. Pedretti won a 10-4 decision over Reinsma pushing the Peacocks’ lead to 6-0.

SMSU’s Ethan Hildebrandt (141 pounds) almost had a pin early in the first period against Upper Iowa’s Victor Coronado earning three points with a nearfall. Hildebrandt led 5-0 heading into the second period. He went on to pick up a 6-1 decision improving his record to 15-7 on the season.

The Peacocks extended their lead to 9-3 when Colby Kriegel defeated SMSU’s David Albrecht in the 149 pound bout. Kriegel won a tight 6-5 decision. Winston Robbins of Upper Iowa defeated SMSU’s Casey Field at 157 pounds to give the Peacocks a 12-3 lead heading into the 165 pound bout.

Upper Iowa won the next two bouts first at 165 when Bryce Lumzy pinned Logan McAlpin at 2:53 pushing the Peacocks’ lead to 18-3 and Wade Gobin defeated Zach Coates at 174 pounds in a 7-4 decision giving Upper Iowa a 21-3 lead.

CD Johnson stretched his season record to 20-11 earning a 10-2 major decision over Mark Mueller in the 197-pound bout. Martin Hagen followed that bout at 197 pounds and fell in a 9-3 decision to Carl Broghammer which stretched the Peacocks lead to 24-7.
