#3 St. Cloud State Charts Victory at #11 Upper Iowa

The #3 St. Cloud State University scored a 21-12 victory at #11 Upper Iowa University on Sunday, Feb. 13.  The victory improved SCSU’s record to 18-2 on the season and the Huskies will conclude their regular season on Thursday, Feb. 17 with a 7 p.m. home match against #8 Minnesota State at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud.

The match at UIU scored a win in the opening bout with a 6-1 decision by #2 Trevor Franklin over SCSU’s Dylan Wright at 125-pounds.  The Peacocks gained their second win of the afternoon with a 3-1 decision by #1 ranked Kyle Pedretti over SCSU’s Eric Ellington at 133-pounds.

The Huskies kicked it into gear at 141-pounds with a 12-6 victory by #8 Gabe Suarez over UIU’s Blake Hilmer.  At 149-pounds, SCSU Jacob R. Horn posted a big 14-4 major decision over UIU’s Colby Kriegel to give the Huskies’ their first lead of the match.

At 157-pounds, #2 ranked John Sundgren of SCSU collected a 15-0 major decision at 3:40 of his match against UIU’s Winston Robbins.  At 165-pounds, #2 Tad Merritt helped push SCSU’s lead to 15-6 with a 7-3 victory over UIU’s Bryce Lumzy.

The Huskies’ run was halted at 174-pounds as UIU’s Mark Mueller posted a 3-2 victory over #8 Shamus O’Grady of SCSU.  Upper Iowa added its final win of the match with a 3-1 victory by Wade Gobin over SCSU’s Mic Berg at 184-pounds.

Up 15-12, SCSU got back on track at 197-pounds with a 3-2 win by #6 Lucas Munkelwitz over UIU’s #8 Carl Broghammer.

The285-pound match was the highlight match of the afternoon as it pitted two of the nation’s top four wrestlers in SCSU’s Jake Kahnke (#1 NCAA) and UIU’s Zach Rosol (#4 NCAA). Both wrestlers fought off strong takedown attempts in a scoreless first period.   The match moved to the final period without a score, but Kahnke put two minutes of ride time on the board. The Husky heavyweight scored a reversal and a takedown in the final period and claimed a 6-2 victory.

With the win, St. Cloud State took the NSIC dual by a final score of 21-12.

#3 St. Cloud State to Challenge #11 Upper Iowa

  • The Huskies added two more wins to their totals this year with a 39-0 shutout win at Halenbeck Hall against Northern State on Feb. 4 and a 40-3 victory over Mary on Feb. 5 at Halenbeck Hall.  SCSU only lost one match over the weekend and the Huskies’ also gained four pins over the weekend.  A highlight of the weekend was Jake Kahnke, who notched a 5-4 decision against #2 ranked Matt Meuleners of Northern State and a pinfall against Austin Woo of Mary.  Kahnke earned NSIC Wrestler of the Week notice for his work in the two matches.  He is still ranked #1 in the nation at 285-pounds with a 21-1 record.
  • Apologies to SCSU’s 1970-71 squad.  Last week, the release listed the 1964-65 team owning the team dual match win record with 15 wins.  Former coach John Oxton’s squad in 1970-71 actually owned the season record with a 16-3-1 mark.  SCSU’s 2010-11 has now moved into the top spot in the team records with its 17-2 record this winter.
  • The Huskies were ranked #3 in the latest DII Coaches’ Poll behind Nebraska Omaha. Here is a rundown of SCSU’s nationally ranked wrestlers in 2010-11:  Gabe Suarez (#8 at 141-pounds), Jacob D. Horn (#7 at 149-pounds), John Sundgren (#2 at 157-pounds), Tad Merritt (#2 at 165-pounds),  Shamus O’Grady (#8 at 174-pounds), Luke Munkelwitz (#6 at 197-pounds) and Jake Kahnke (#1 at 285-pounds).  The poll was released on Feb. 2.
  • Junior Tad Merritt continues to lead the Huskies this season with 29 victories (29-3) and 12 pins. Merritt is ranked #2 in the nation.
  • The Huskies have already shattered the team’s dual match point record for a season.  SCSU has 553 points in dual matches this season, which breaks the old team record of 515 points set in 2009-10.  In contrast, SCSU has allowed only 147 dual match points this winter.  SCSU is allowing just 7.7 points per dual match this season.  The team record of 8.06 points allowed per dual match was set in 1963-64.
  • SCSU has only allowed 126SCSU placed 3rd at the 2011 NWCA Division II National Duals on Jan. 8-9. The third place finish is the best in team history for the Huskies at the DII National Duals.
  • The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (14-7, 5-2 NSIC/3rd) captured 7th place at the 2010 NCAA Division II wrestling championships on March 12-13, in Omaha, Neb.  This marks the Huskies best NCAA finish since capturing 7th place in 1983.  This also marked the best finish for the Huskies at the NCAA tournament since Steve Costanzo took over as head coach in 2006-07.  This marked the 8th time since 1975 that SCSU has charted a top-10 place at the NCAA championships.  The 7th place finish is the best ever for the Huskies at the NCAA DII level. SCSU placed eighth at the nationals in 2009, 1986 and 1976.  SCSU also placed third at nationals during the 1963 and 1965 seasons as an NAIA affiliate.
  • The Huskies qualified 8 wrestlers for the NCAA championships in 2010.  SCSU wrestlers earning All-America status at the meet were Jacob Kahnke (4th place at 285), Tad Merritt (5th place at 165), Shamus O’Grady (6th place at 174) and Gabe Suarez (8th place at 141).  This marked the first All-America finish for Kahnke, O’Grady and Suarez, while Merritt is now a two-time All-America award winner for the Huskies. The four All-Americans ties a team record for the Huskies, as SCSU also brought home four NCAA All-America honors in 1983 and 1975.
  • The Huskies will have two major targets on the wrestling room wall this season.  First up is the 2011 NCAA Regional championships on Feb. 27 in Sioux Falls, S.D.  This tournament serves as a qualifier for the other big date – March 11-12, which is the 2011 NCAA DII championships.
  • SCSU COACH STEVE COSTANZO: Steve Costanzo is in his 5th season as the Husky head wrestling coach.  Overall, this marks Costanzo’s 12th season as a head college wrestling coach.  He has a career record of 118-53-2 while coaching 98 National Qualifiers, 41 All-Americans, 2 National Champions and 36 NWCA All-Academic recipients.  His record at St. Cloud State now stands at 56-23.  An All-American wrestler at Nebraska-Omaha (1996 graduate), Costanza previously coached at Dana College from 1999 to 2006. Costanza led Dana to a national title in 2006.

SCSU’s Kahnke Earns NSIC Wrestler of the Week

St. Cloud State University sophomore Jacob Kahnke (Shakopee/Prior Lake H.S.) was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestler of the week on Feb. 7.

Jacob KahnkeKahnke, the #1 ranked NCAA Division II heavyweight in the nation, improved to 21-1 with a pair of victories on Feb. 4-5 for the #3 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (17-2).

Kahnke opened his weekend on February 4 with a quality 5-4 decision over #2 ranked Matt Meuleners of Northern State. Kahnke’s big win at 285-pounds helped the Huskies gain a 39-0 shutout against the Wolves at Halenbeck Hall.

To complete the weekend, Kahnke post a 4:32 pinfall against the University of Mary’s Austin Woo. This was Kahnke’s third pin of the season and it helped the Huskies gain a 40-3 win over Mary.

This marks the second time this season that Kahnke has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week.

The Huskies will continue their 2010-11 season on Feb. 13 with a road match at #11 Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa.  Husky wrestling fans should mark Feb. 17 on their calendars, as SCSU will finish its 2010-11 dual season with a 7 p.m. home match against #8 Minnesota State.   This match will mark Senior Day at Halenbeck Hall.

As always, all SCSU students with a valid student ID card will be admitted FREE to all regular season Husky wrestling matches in 2010-11.

St. Cloud State 40 Mary 3

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 3 St. Cloud State wrestling team earned their school record 17th win of the season and nearly recorded a shutout weekend with a 40-3 win over the University of Mary Saturday afternoon in Halenbeck Hall.

The Huskies (17-2) lost only one match in their last two duals and have outscored opponents 117-6 on their home mat in Halenbeck this season after posting three pins and four major decisions Saturday.

Freshman Dylan Wright (6-5) won the first match of the day at 125-lbs with a 11-3 major decision and was followed by senior Weston Hanson (7-6) who pinned his opponent 2:04 into the 133-pound match.

Junior Jacob D. Horn recorded his 19th win of the season with a 17-8 major decision in the 149-pound contest before No. 2 ranked Tad Merritt (29-3) pinned his 165-pound opponent 33 seconds into the second period of his match.

Sophomore Shamus O’Grady (23-7) earned a major decision in the 174-pound match with a 16-7 win and junior Lucas Munkelwitz (16-5) recorded a takedown in the final seconds of his 197-pound match to earn the final major decision of the day in a 9-0 victory.

The No. 1 ranked heavyweight in the nation, sophomore Jake Kahnke, then pinned his opponent 4:32 into the final match of the day to improve to a stellar 21-1 on the season.

The Huskies will now go back on the road for their final regular season road-dual as they take on Upper Iowa at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13 in Fayette, Iowa.

St. Cloud State 39 Northern State 0

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 3 St. Cloud State University wrestling team set a new school record for dual meet victories with a dominating 39-0 win over Northern State University Friday evening at Halenbeck Hall.The Huskies are now an impressive 16-2 this season and set a new bench mark for wins after the 1964-65 squad set the standard 45 years ago with 15 victories.

The Huskies earned five decisions, three major decisions and one fall that happened in the 174-pound match as Shamus O’Grady (21-7) recorded a quick pin just 1:03 into the match.

In the biggest matchup of the evening between No. 1 and No. 2 heavyweights in the county, Jake Kahnke made it clear he was the top-seeded wrestler with a 5-4 decision in the final match of the night.

Kahnke (20-1) was down 3-2 to start the final period, but made an escape three seconds into the period and earned the victory with a takedown at the 1:42 mark to help the Huskies record their second shutout of the season.

John Sundgren (8-2) earned a major decision victory with a 16-2 win in the 157-pound match and No. 2 ranked Tad Merritt (28-3) followed it with a major decision of his own in the 165-pound match in a 15-3 victory.

Michael Berg (15-11) posted the final major decision of the evening in the 184-pound match with a 12-3 win.

The Huskies will next host Northern the University of Mary at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall. Both matches will be held in Halenbeck Hall and tickets can be purchased at the gate.  As always, all SCSU students are admitted FREE to all regular season home matches with a valid SCSU student ID.

  • Over 50 alumni wrestlers were on hand to celebrate Husky Wrestling Alumni Day at SCSU on Jan. 30. SCSU responded to the big crowd in Halenbeck Hall with a big 38-3 win over visiting MSU Moorhead. The victory tied a team record for dual wins in a season, as the Huskies are now 15-2 in 2010-11. The 15-win record was originally set by SCSU during the 1964-65 season. Wrestlers from all eras of SCSU wrestling were on hand for the event, which concluded with an evening social at DB Searle’s in downtown St. Cloud. SCSU opened its week with a tough 18-13 loss to #2 Augustana in Sioux Falls. A well-played match, Augie relied upon two OT victories in the dual to gain the edge. A highlight of that match was SCSU’s #5 John Sundgren win over #2 Marcus Eddington at 157-pounds. SCSU’s #1 Jake Kahnke gained a major decison win at heavyweight, while #2 Tad Merritt won at 165-pounds and Mic Berg won at 184-pounds.

#3 St. Cloud State rolls to a 38-3 win over Minnesota State Moorhead

Huskies tie team record for wins in a season!

St. Cloud, Minn. – The #3 St. Cloud State University wrestling team tied a team record for dual meet victories with a 38-3 win over Minnesota State, Moorhead on Jan. 30 at Halenbeck Hall. Before a large Alumni Day gathering at the match, the Huskies tallied their 15th win of the season, which ties the team record for dual match wins in a season that was set in 1964-65.

SCSU is now 15-2 on the season, and the Huskies will next host Northern State on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., and Mary on Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. Both matches will be held in Halenbeck Hall and tickets can be purchased at the gate. As always, all SCSU students are admitted FREE to all regular season home matches with a valid SCSU student ID.

MSUM’s lone points were tallied in the opening match of the day as Corey Ulmer posted a 7-0 win over SCSU’s Dylan Wright at 125-pounds.

The Huskies turned on the pressure after that setback with a 13-4 major decision win by Eric Ellington over MSUM’s Evan Forde at 133-pounds. SCSU charted a pin by Gabe Suarez at 141-pounds. Suarez took care of business at 4:20 against MSUM’s Connor MacGregor.

Jacob D. Horn added another major decision win for SCSU at 149-pounds with a 12-3 victory over MSUM’s Tyler Steinwand. At 157-pounds, John Sundgren scored a 7-2 decision over MSUM’s Tallen Wald.

SCSU’s #2 ranked Tad Merritt joined the major decision crowd with a 13-2 victory over Tyler Kivel of MSUM at 165-pounds. The Huskies then iced the match at 174-pounds with a big 21-6 tech fall win (7:00) by Shamus O’Grady over MSUM’s Jacob Bennett.

To complete the run, SCSU’s Mic Berg gained a 9-4 decision over MSUM’s Kody Kalkbrenner at 184-pounds. SCSU’s Lucas Munkelwitz added the Huskies’ second fall of the day with a 1:48 pin over MSUM’s Brian Woelfel at 197-pounds. At 285-pounds, SCSU’s Jake Kahnke (ranked #1 in the nation) coined a 6-2 decision win over MSUM’s Jon Swart to complete the score at 38-3 in favor of SCSU.

A highlight of the day was the introduction of the SCSU wrestling alumni in attendance at the match during intermission. This large contingent of SCSU wrestling alumni were spotlighted by the SCSU announcer and the day was completed with a post-match reception at D.B. Searle’s in downtown St. Cloud. This group included representatives from all eras of Husky wrestling dating back to the 1950s.
