The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (7-0, 2-0 NSIC) broke its own NCAA Division II record for consecutive dual wins on Friday, Jan. 10 with a solid 30-4 decision over Maryville University. The match was SCSU’s first match of the day at the 2020 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament, which is being held this weekend in Louisville, Kentucky.
The victory was SCSU’s 55th consecutive win, which breaks the old NCAA DII record of 54 consecutive wins set by the Huskies from Jan. 30, 2011 to Jan. 12, 2014. SCSU’s current win streak dates back to a 22-17 loss to Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 2017. Since that time, SCSU has charted two consecutive undefeated seasons under the leadership of head coach Steve Costanzo, and the Huskies currently own a 7-0 record in 2019-20.
St. Cloud State will now advance in the NWCA Duals bracket with a quarterfinal showdown against #7 ranked Tiffin University on Friday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. (CT) on Freedom Hall’s Mat 7 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Manheim, Pennsylvania — A record 92 college teams will be participating in Mat Mayhem this coming weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center at the NWCA’s annual National Duals.
The 2020 U.S. Marine Corps NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships presented by ARMS Software and Defense Soap hosted by NUWAY takes place January 10-11 with Louisville as the host for the second straight year.
“Last year, we saw great support from the wrestling community in Louisville and the state of Kentucky and we’re excited to expand even more this year with the record number of teams participating and even some local high schools getting into the mix, hosting one of their regional dual meet events here at the Kansas Exposition Center,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.

St. Cloud State University senior Kolton Eischens (Pierz, Minn./Healy H.S.) has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5.
A graduate of Healy High School and resident of Pierz, Minn., Eischens led the Huskies to a 33-16 victory over #23 ranked Western Colorado on Jan. 5 in St. Cloud, Minn. He charted a 6:29 pin at 174-pounds in the dual match against WCU’s James Laconte, who is ranked #11 in the nation at 174-pounds among NCAA DII wrestlers.
#1 St. Cloud State wrestling posts a 33-16 win over Western Colorado
The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (6-0, 2-0 NSIC) opened the new year with a key 33-16 victory over non-conference rival #23 Western Colorado (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) on Sunday, Jan. 5 before a large SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day crowd in Halenbeck Hall.
The victory extended SCSU’s consecutive match win streak to 54, which ties a team and NCAA DII record for most consecutive dual match wins. The Huskies previously put together 54 wins from Jan. 30, 2011 to Jan. 12, 2014.
In a tough battle on Jan, 5, Western Colorado opened the dual with three consecutive wins to gain a 16-0 lead over the Huskies. At 125, #3 Patrick Allis posted a 1:07 pin against SCSU’s Robby Horsman. The Mountaineers extended their lead at 133-pounds with a 14-5 major decision win by Cody Fatziner over SCSU’s Brandon Betancourt. WCU’s run ended at 141-pounds with a 4:35 pin by Jason Hanenberg over SCSU’s Joey Bianchini.
SCSU wrestling to host Western Colorado on Jan. 5
The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (5-0, 2-0 NSIC) opened 2020 as the nation’s number one ranked NCAA Division II wrestling team. The Huskies received 111 points to maintain their top spot in the NWCA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, which was released on Jan. 1.
The Huskies had nine individual wrestlers ranked in the latest DII poll and ranked 41 points ahead of #2 Pitt-Johnstown on the poll. The remainder of the poll’s top ten ranked NCAA DII teams includes Notre Dame of Ohio (67), Nebraska Kearney (57), McKendree (56), Central Oklahoma (49), Tiffin (45), Ashland (37), Upper Iowa (37) and Newberry (35). NSIC rivals Minnesota State (15th) and Northern State (17th) were also ranked in the poll this week.
St. Cloud State will continue its 2019-20 season with a non-conference match against #23 Western Colorado University at home on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. The match has been designated as SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day and all SCSU wrestling alumni are invited to return to campus for this match to meet up again with former teammates and watch the #1 nationally ranked Huskies battle Western Colorado that day.
The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 and Individual Rankings have been released for January 1, 2020.
The annual St. Cloud State University Wrestling Alumni Day is set for Sunday, Jan. 5. The Huskies will host Western Colorado State in Halenbeck Hall and the match time is slated for 1 p.m. All SCSU wrestling alumni are invited to return to campus for this match to meet up again with former teammates and watch the #1 nationally ranked Huskies battle Western Colorado State that day.
