Huskies’ Muphy earns NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State 174-pounder Dominic Murphy has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week following his dominant start to the Huskies’ NSIC schedule, pinning No. 5 Job Ayala at 2:33 in Friday’s 37-3 win over UW-Parkside. Entering the bout ranked No. 10 in the NWCA poll, Murphy scored an opportunistic pin of Ayala in a battle with one of the Rangers’ top athletes.

“I am very proud of Dominic’s consistent work ethic and competitive spirit,” said head coach Steve Costanzo, “He strives every day to do his best both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. He is very deserving of receiving NSIC wrestler of the week honors.”

St. Cloud State 37 UW-Parkside 3

No. 2 St. Cloud State handles No. 9 UW-Parkside 37-3 in NSIC opener

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 2 St. Cloud State Wrestling demolished No. 9 UW-Parkside 37-3 in their conference opener on Friday evening in Kenosha. The Huskies won nine of ten bouts with three bonus-point wins. No. 5 Noah Ryan and No. 10 Dominic Murphy each scored pins at 197 and 174 while No. 6 Garrett Vos closed out the dual with an 11-0 major decision at 133.

“I was very proud of the way our guys competed tonight. We have had some adverse situations this week and we overcame them,” said St. Cloud State Coach Steve Costanzo.

Huskies open NSIC season with road dual at No. 9 UW-Parkside

St. Cloud, Minn. – No. 2 St. Cloud State Wrestling travels to No. 9 UW-Parkside on Friday for their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual of the season. The Huskies and Rangers will begin at 6:30 p.m. CST in Kenosha.

The reigning NSIC Champions defeated UW-Parkside 26-9 last season in Kenosha, winning seven of 10 bouts including major decisions by Joseph Bianchini and Kameron Teacher. SCSU enters the dual 4-0 on the season fresh off a 3-0 performance at the Carolina Clash. Each of the Huskies’ four wins has come against nationally-recognized foes – No. 14 Lake Erie, No. 4 West Liberty, No. 18 UNC-Pembroke, and RV Lander.

No. 2 SCSU goes 3-0 at The Carolina Clash

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 2 St. Cloud State Wrestling swept their three duals at the inaugural Carolina Clash on Saturday, upending No. 4 West Liberty 26-12, No. 18 UNC-Pembroke 33-6, and RV Lander 31-13. 10 Huskies went undefeated throughout the day while four wrestlers picked up wins over ranked opponents. The three wins advance the Huskies’ dual win streak to an NCAA DII-record 73 straight.

NCAA-leading nine Huskies ranked in first NWCA Regular Season Poll

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – An NCAA DII leading nine wrestlers have been ranked at their classes in the first regular-season National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll of 2021-22. Reigning National Champion St. Cloud State moved to No. 2 in the polls, just one point behind Central Oklahoma. Joseph Bianchini remains the No. 1 wrestler at 141 pounds, Kameron Teacher holds his No. 2 rank at heavyweight, 157-pounder Colby Njos stays at No. 3 and Noah Ryan keeps his No. 5 nod at 197. Garrett Vos moved to No. 6 at 133 while Billy Pitzner stands at No. 9 at 184. No. 8 Devin Donovan, No. 10 Jake Barzowski, and No. 10 Dominic Murphy each made their debuts in the polls at 165, 149, and 174 respectively.

NWCA NCAA DII Rankings – December 3, 2021

The Bronchos, who came in at #4 in the Preseason Edition of the poll, were last ranked #1 Oct. 23, 2007, after finishing as the 2007 NCAA Division II National Champions the previous season. They sit atop the first 2021-22 regular season poll behind seven ranked wrestlers, including two number ones in defending National Champion Heath Gray at 184, and returning National Finalist Dalton Abney at 197.

Central Oklahoma edged out three-time defending National Champions, St. Cloud State, by just one point, amassing 85 points to the Huskies’ 84. Nebraska-Kearney (74 points), West Liberty (70 points), and Lindenwood (57 points) round out the top five teams.

No. 1 St. Cloud State battles three nationally-recognized opponents at Carolina Clash this weekend

St. Cloud, Minn. – No. 1 St. Cloud State Wrestling travels to Greenwood, South Carolina this weekend for the inaugural Carolina Clash Duals on Saturday, December 4. The Huskies begin their competition against No. 5 West Liberty at 11:00 a.m. CT, followed by No. 19 UNC-Pembroke at 12:30 p.m., then close the Clash with host RV Lander at 2:00 p.m.

SCSU has only faced UNC-Pembroke in a dual prior to the Carolina Clash, handling the Braves 40-7 on January 12, 2013, at the National Duals then opening the 2017 Newberry Duals with a 44-3 win that featured five Huskies pins. Jake Barzowski pinned his Pembroke opponent in the latter dual while wrestling as the Huskies’ 149-pounder.
