Huskies open 2020 as the nation’s number one ranked team

SCSU wrestling to host Western Colorado on Jan. 5

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (5-0, 2-0 NSIC) opened 2020 as the nation’s number one ranked NCAA Division II wrestling team. The Huskies received 111 points to maintain their top spot in the NWCA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, which was released on Jan. 1.

The Huskies had nine individual wrestlers ranked in the latest DII poll and ranked 41 points ahead of #2 Pitt-Johnstown on the poll. The remainder of the poll’s top ten ranked NCAA DII teams includes Notre Dame of Ohio (67), Nebraska Kearney (57), McKendree (56), Central Oklahoma (49), Tiffin (45), Ashland (37), Upper Iowa (37) and Newberry (35). NSIC rivals Minnesota State (15th) and Northern State (17th) were also ranked in the poll this week.

St. Cloud State will continue its 2019-20 season with a non-conference match against #23 Western Colorado University at home on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. The match has been designated as SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day and all SCSU wrestling alumni are invited to return to campus for this match to meet up again with former teammates and watch the #1 nationally ranked Huskies battle Western Colorado that day.

Save The Date! SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day set for Jan. 5

The annual St. Cloud State University Wrestling Alumni Day is set for Sunday, Jan. 5. The Huskies will host Western Colorado State in Halenbeck Hall and the match time is slated for 1 p.m. All SCSU wrestling alumni are invited to return to campus for this match to meet up again with former teammates and watch the #1 nationally ranked Huskies battle Western Colorado State that day. St. Cloud State 29 Northern State 9

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling remained undefeated in 2019-20 with a 29-9 victory at Northern State on Friday, Dec. 13 in Aberdeen, S.D.

SCSU opened the match at 149 with a 7-2 victory by Joey Bianchini over NSU’s #8 Caden Moore. At 157, SCSU’s #2 James Pleski lost a 7-5 match against James Burks of Northern State before the Huskies’ Brock Schlough replied with a big 7-1 victory over NSU’s Billy Holtan at 165.

At 174-pounds, #3 ranked Kolton Eischens continued his solid start in 2019-20 with a 5:55 fall over NSU’s Tanner Wiese. At 184-pounds. #3 Tyree Overton collected a 6-4 victory over NSU’s Marcus Placide.

St. Cloud State brings back wins from BVU Open

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team continued its season of success with a strong showing at the 2019 Buena Vista Open, which was held on Dec. 7 in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The Huskies saw several athletes place in the open including first place finishes by Garrett Aldrich and Joey Bianchini (co-champs) at 141 pounds and Colby Njos at 165-pounds. James Pleski placed second at 149-pounds after losing a close tiebreaker match against Minnesota’s Jake Bergeland. At 184-pounds, Tyree Overton placed second after losing a 4-2 match against DI rival Parker Keckisen of Northern Iowa.
