St. Cloud State opens season with 3-0 record at Northeast Duals

Huskies defeat #1 ranked Pitt-Johnstown 31-6

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team opened its 2019-20 season in top order with a trio of victories at the 2019 Journeymen Northeast Duals, which were held in Troy, N.Y. on Nov. 9.

The Huskies (3-0, 0-0 NSIC) started the day’s action with a big 54-0 win over American International. SCSU then charted a huge 31-6 win over #1 ranked Pitt-Johnstown in the second match of the day at the NE Duals. To finish the action out east, SCSU rolled to a 43-0 win over Johnson-Wales.

St. Cloud State gone undefeated over the past two seasons and currently owns a 51 dual match winning streak dating back to the 2016-17 season.

St. Cloud State opens 2019-20 campaign at Northeast Duals

The #2 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (0-0, 0-0 NSIC) will open its 2019-20 season on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a trip the 2019 Journeymen Northeast Duals, which will be held in Troy, N.Y.

The Huskies will open the tournament with a match against American International at 12:00 p.m. (ET) on Nov. 9. SCSU will then challenge #1 ranked Pitt-Johnstown at 2:00 p.m. (ET) and then finish the trip with a 4:00 p.m. (ET) match against Johnson-Wales.

All matches will be held at the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y.

St. Cloud State opens season with intrasquad exhibition

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – November is here, which means the St. Cloud State University wrestling season is finally upon us. The Huskies opened the 2019-20 season in outstanding fashion, as they partook in the exhibition match and unveiled the 2019 National Champions Banner in Halenbeck Hall Gymnasium Friday evening.

The Black/Red Intersquad meet allowed St. Cloud State to show off its incredible depth entering the upcoming 2019-20 season. The Black team, though, which featured six NCAA national qualifiers, was able to come away with the victory, beating the Red team by a final score of 40-0.

The Black team was dominant in its first two matches of the night, as Brandon Bettancourt (Clovis, Calif.) and #3 Garrett Vos (Bonifacius, Minn.) both won by decision. Bettancourt defeated Robby Horsman (Kasson, Minn.) by decision 13-5 before Vos recorded won of the most dominant wins of the night, beating Ashton Clark (Park Rapids, Minn.) by decision 19-4.

St. Cloud State wrestling opens season on Nov. 1 with Black/Red Classic

Eischens, Overton, Pleski, and Teacher named team captains

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team, which recently earned a number two ranking in the NWCA DII Wrestling Coaches’ Association preseason poll, will kick-off its 2019-20 season with the annual Black/Red Classic intrasquad match on Friday, Nov. 1 in SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall.

This match will feature two squads selected from the Huskies’ 2019-20 roster and they will be led by honorary coaches Jarred Oftedahl (Team Black) and Lucas Munkelwitz (Team Red). Oftedahl and Munkelwitz both earned All-America honors during their SCSU wrestling careers with Oftedahl finishing fourth in the nation at 141-pounds in 2018 and Munkelwitz placing fourth at 197-pounds in 2012.

The intrasquad match serves as a key proving ground for the Huskies as they establish their dual match line-ups for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The Huskies will officially open their season on Nov. 9 with matches at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. SCSU will face several top opponents on their trip out east with matches slated against American International, #1 Pitt-Johnstown and Johnson & Wales.

St. Cloud State gains #2 spot in NCAA DII preseason wrestling poll

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team, which has won two consecutive NCAA Division II championships and four NCAA titles since 2015, received a number two ranking in the 2019-20 NWCA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll.

The Huskies received 82 points in the poll, while Pitt-Johnstown was ranked first with 88 points. SCSU was the top NSIC team in the poll, while McKendree was third with 71 points, Nebraska-Kearney was fourth with 68 points and Notre Dame (Ohio) had 58. Lindenwood (46), Minnesota State (43), Newberry (42), Ashland (40) and Maryville (39) rounded out the top 10. The other NSIC team in the poll included Upper Iowa (11th/36 points), while MSU-Moorhead, UMary and Minot State all received votes in the poll.

Individually, Jake Barzowski was the Huskies’ top-ranked wrestler with a number one spot in the poll at 157-pounds. Barzowski is one of SCSU’s returning All-Americans after finishing third in the nation at 157-pounds at the 2019 NCAA DII championships. He posted a 25-3 record for the Huskies in 2018-19.
