Indiana Adds Transfer Roman Rogotzke

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana head coach Angel Escobedo has announced the addition of transfer Roman Rogotzke to the Hoosiers.

Rogotzke joins the team after two years at South Dakota State. He will be a redshirt sophomore in the 2023-24 season.

As a redshirt freshman this past season, Rogotzke compiled a 17-8 record while wrestling at 184 lbs. He primarily wrestled in tournaments, winning both the Worthington and Don Parker Opens, while taking third place at the Last Chance Open and fourth place at the Bison Open.

Junior Schalles winner Rogotzke sacrificed many pinning goals but was still the best

By Mike Finn

Statistically, Ryder Rogotzke did not have the season in 2022-23 that the wrestler from Stillwater (Minn.) High School enjoyed a year earlier when he won the 182-pound Minnesota state championship and posted a 56-1 record as a junior. He also pinned 44 of 47 opponents that he actually wrestled and was named the 2022 Junior Schalles Award for pinning.

But personal statistics did not mean as much to Rogotzke, who was 52-3 and finished second in the 2023 state tournament to end his high school career.

It should be noted that two of Rogotske’s three losses came against the nation’s top-ranked 195-pounder, Max McEnelly of Waconia High School, including in the finals of the state tournament. Rogotzke had wrestled 70 percent of his matches at 182 pounds before moving up to take on an even tougher task in the postseason … even though his normal weight was 190 pounds. (The other loss was an injury disqualification against Rogotzke for an illegal mat return.)

“I was en route to just pin every single person in the season,” said Rogotzke. “We have something called the Pony Stampede, but everyone backed out because we always have the toughest teams in Minnesota there like Waconia. We knew there was a chance I could face McEnelly so we decided give people a match. I had nothing to lose so I bumped up. I ended up losing by two points and was put in the position (to) either stay in my 182 route or set another goal and go get him again.” Continue reading at win-magazine.com →

Pin To Win – Ryder Rogotzke

By Brian Jerzak

During the 2021-22 wrestling season, Stillwater senior Ryder Rogotzke had one of the most dominant seasons a wrestler can have. He lost just one match all season and won his first state championship. In doing so, he pinned his way through the state tournament. During the season, Rogotzke only went the full six minutes twice. He finished with 44 falls – tying the state record for most pins in a season.

"Instead of teaching me how to win, my dad taught me how to pin," Rogotzke said. "That is the easiest way to win. You can be down by ten. If you get the pin, you win. My mentality of pinning everyone was there in the first year. I would go for headlocks, three-quarters, cow catchers, and no one really knew pinning defense. There is not as much strength when you are little. That got me through to now."

Rogotzke found enjoyment and success in two sports as a kid.

"I remember trying t-ball, football, and wrestling," Rogotzke said. "Football and wrestling stuck."

Junior Schalles winner Rogotzke learned to pin at an early age

By Mike Finn

Ryder Rogotzke said he first saw himself as a pinner about the same time his father, Perry, first introduced the sport to this current high school junior from Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota.

“The one quote he built into my head was: ‘Send a message,’” said Rogotzke, who captured the 182-pound state championship this year by recording a state-record 44th pin in the state final. “Well, the best way to send a message for me has been to pin everyone.”

And that’s about what the future Naval Academy wrestler accomplished this past winter in a season that saw him also win a Super 32 championship last October and go 56-1. Ten of those victories came via a forfeit and only two of his victims lasted an entire match against Rogotzke, who learned to overcome any new defense used by his opponents, aware of his pinning reputation.
