MWCA Recognizes 2020 State Individual Team Champions

Since 2013, the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has recognized the Team Champions from the MSHSL Individual State Tournament. The winning team and runner-up from each class (A, AA, and AAA) earn a plaque to display at their respective schools.

This year the MWCA is proud to recognize Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove as the Class A Champion, Simley as the Class AA Champion, and Stillwater as the Class AAA Champion.

Unbeaten Shakopee repeats as 3A wrestling champ

The Sabers’ Tommy Johnson edged unbeaten foe Josh Piechowski at 220 to clinch the win — and a perfect 41-0 season.

Having coached more teams with high expectation that he cares to count, Shakopee coach Jim Jackson knows the best way to deal with them: play dumb.

More like, unaware. As in, when you have a team of athletes with state championship expectations, how do you address them?

“We don’t really talk about them,” Jackson said. “We just focus on learning and improving every day. We don’t talk about rankings or anything like that. We just go out there and do our job.”

The Sabers did their jobs exceedingly well this season, winning all 41 dual meets they had. The 41st was the most important, facing a finally healthy and immensely talented Stillwater in the Class 3A final on Thursday at Xcel Energy Center. Continue reading at mnwrestlinghub.com

Hartung takes the reins for Ponies

A familiar face has been named the new head coach for the Stillwater wrestling program.

After serving as an assistant for the Ponies each of the past two seasons, Tim Hartung was recently promoted to head coach according to SAHS Activities Director Ricky Michel.

“We’re excited to have him here and I think the wrestling program is in great hands,” Michel said. “Obviously he’s very knowledgeable and he has experience as a head coach. He’s highly respected in the wrestling community here. I think Stillwater wrestling is on an upswing and I think he will take it and run with it and do very well with it. We’re extremely happy.”

The decision was hardly a surprise for Hartung, who coached at Iowa State before returning to Minnesota and coaching at the high school level at Eagan and Wayzata. His involvement in the Stillwater Area Wrestling Club (SAW) began in 2014. Continue reading at www.hometownsource.com
