Gophers rising sophomore Gable Steveson (125kg) and alum Pat Smith (77kg) are set to compete at Final X: Rutgers this Saturday in a pair of best-of-three series. Steveson faces 2018 World Medalist Nick Gwiazdowski in freestyle while Smith challenges 2019 US Open Champion Kamal Bey in Greco-Roman.
Smith will be the second bout in the 5 pm evening session while Steveson and Gwiazdowski will wrestle fifth following the Whitney Conder/Victoria Anthony bout. For up-to-the-minute updates, follow @GopherWrestling on Twitter.

The U.S. wrestling community, including its leading organizations, is celebrating today’s announcement from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) concerning women’s wrestling.
The NCAA’s Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) has “recommended that all three divisions of the NCAA governance structure add women’s wrestling as an NCAA emerging sport, effective August 1, 2020.”
Each NCAA division (Division I, Division II and Division III) will address this recommendation separately and will determine independently if women’s wrestling is added to the division’s Emerging Sports list. Continue reading
Indiana native and 2019 U.S. Junior world teamer Brayton Lee joins The MatBoss Podcast with Chad Dennis this week. Lee talks about his redshirt season at Minnesota and his expected weight class next season, but most of the show focuses on Lee earning the spot to represent Team USA in Estonia later this summer at the Junior World Championships. RALEIGH, N.C. — The gash on Brayton Lee’s forehead left the Minnesota freshman bloodied and bandaged Saturday at the conclusion of the World Team Trials, but that was nothing compared to what he encountered last week.
His back hurt so much last week that he ordered an Uber ride to haul him a block from his dorm room to the Minnesota practice facility.

Shilson qualifies for the U23 World Championships in Budapest in October
IRVING, Texas – Three past age-group World champions help make up the 2019 U23 World Team, which was decided on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Women’s National Championships in Irving, Texas.
The 2019 U23 Worlds are set for October 28-November 3 in Budapest, Hungary.
Leading the squad is 2017 Junior World champion Maya Nelson at 65 kg and 2018 Cadet World champions Emily Shilson at 50 kg and Macey Kilty at 68 kg.
Junior World champ Nelson, who sat out the 2018 season, returned to the mat this year and eased her way to a U23 World Team with four technical fall wins on the day. In the finals, she went through 2016 Cadet World Team member Ashlynn Ortega. Continue reading at www.teamusa.org
