TALLINN, Estonia – South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan is ready to take on the world.
The second-year Jackrabbit wrestler is scheduled to compete at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships, which begin Monday. Sloan is slated to wrestle in the 97-kilogram weight class of the freestyle competition.
Sloan earned a spot on Team USA by winning the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Raleigh, North Carolina, in May. In his first international competition a month later, Sloan won the gold medal at the UWW Pan American Championship in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
“I feel we like to hand-fight harder, wrestle harder than some of the foreign countries,” Sloan said. “I felt that when I was in Guatemala, so that was good experience before going over to worlds.”
Former University of Minnesota and current Minnesota Storm wrestler Pat Smith (77kg) took home his fourth Pan American Games gold medal on Wednesday in Lima, Peru, when he defeated Wuilexis Rivas of Venezuela in the championship bout.
Smith had previously won Greco-Roman gold medals at the games in 2015, 2016, and 2017 now adding a 2019 gold medal at a higher weight class.
LIMA, Peru – The USA put two Greco-Roman wrestlers into the finals and three others into the bronze match of the 2019 Pan American Games on the first day of action in Lima, Peru.
Only five athletes competed on Wednesday, including Ildar Hafizov, Ellis Coleman, Pat Smith, Joe Rau and G’Angelo Hancock. 2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon is scheduled to compete tomorrow at 130 kg.
Smith and Hancock advanced to the gold-medal matches at 77 kg and 97 kg, respectively.

LIMA, Peru – At this week’s Pan American Games, Team USA will be led by a trio of successful volunteer coaches handpicked by USA Wrestling including new North Dakota State University head assistant wrestling coach Obenson Blanc. Herb House (Greco-Roman), Troy Steiner (women’s freestyle) and Blanc will guide American athletes alongside the U.S. National Team Coaches.
Wrestling at the Pan Am Games begins at 10 a.m. CT on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and available on ESPN3. The tournament runs through Saturday, Aug. 10, at Miguel Grau Coliseum.
Prior to making the move to North Dakota State in July 2019, Blanc spent four years at North Carolina State as an assistant coach under the direction of Pat Popolizio.
Former Gophers grappler Pat Smith is set to compete for USA Wrestling at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru, on Wednesday, August 7.
Smith will compete at 77kg (~170lbs) in Greco-Roman wrestling after previously winning the same competition three times between 2015 and 2017. His tournament kicks off on Wednesday morning with the finals coming later that same day.
Waseca wrestler Mason Gehloff went 0-1 at the UWW Cadet World Championships on August 3rd in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Gehloff, who wrestled Greco-Roman at 45 kg (99.2 lbs.), lost to Gheorghita Scheul of Romania 6-2 in his first match. Schuel later lost to Mahdi Ahadi Zenab of Iran to end Gehloff’s tournament.
Simley wrestler Ryan Sokol went 1-1 at the UWW Cadet World Championships on July 29th in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Sokol, who wrestled Freestyle at 65 kg (143.3 lbs.), defeated Ionut Vintila of Moldova 10-0 in the round of 32. He then lost to Davit Patsinashvili of Georgia 12-0 in the Round of 16. Sokol was eliminated from competition when Patsinashvili lost in the semifinals.
