Kerkvliet and Howard punch tickets to second-consecutive Cadet Worlds

AKRON, Ohio – Team USA’s Cadet World Team is completed after the Cadet Freestyle Trials wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with 10 talented, young athletes punching their tickets to the 2018 Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, July 2-8.

Highlighting the 2018 squad are returning World Team members Daniel Kerkvliet at 110 kg and Robert Howard at 55 kg.

Kerkvliet will head to Croatia to defend his World title from 2017. In Akron, he went unscored on, winning three shutout technical falls to advance to the finals. There, Kerkvliet continued his dominance with two quick wins over Hunter Catka. Continue reading

Burks brothers and eight others make 2018 Cadet Greco World Team

As competition wrapped up in Akron for the Greco-Roman Cadets, the 2018 UWW Cadet World Team welcomed ten newcomers Friday to don the Red, White and Blue at the Cadet World Championships this summer in Zagreb, Croatia, July 2-8.

Four of the ten weights took to a third match to determine help determine the World Team, with two brothers bouncing back from second-round losses to secure their spots representing Team USA in Zagreb.

Jakason Burks took the lead in his series with Aizayah Yacapin with a close victory in the first round. Burks then avenged his loss in the second round with a 10-8 victory in the third round to solidify his spot at the 51 kg weight class. Continue reading

Zillmer, Nelson Compete in World Team Trial Finals

Rochester, Minn. – There were two Minnesota wrestlers who battled in the best-of-three finals today at the World Team Trials with Hayden Zillmer, who hails from Minneapolis, earning a Final X birth at 92-kilograms.

University of Minnesota alum Tony Nelson, who was fresh off his victory over Gable Steveson yesterday, dropped his finals series with, now former, Michigan wrestler Adam Coon.

Zillmer took on Deron Winn, who wrestled for a junior college in the past, also fought and won in a Bellator fight just recently. Zillmer patiently wrestled his way to an 8-2 win in the first bout. It was the second bout that Zillmer brought the fireworks. Continue reading

Fix tops Ramos in two, Valencia upsets Dieringer as Final X field in men’s freestyle is completed

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The remaining 10 spots for Final X have been determined after an action-packed afternoon at World Team Trials Challenge Tournament best-of-three finals in Rochester, Minn., on Sunday.

In the headlining series of the day, Daton Fix, who just wrapped up his freshman season at Oklahoma State, avenged his U.S. Open loss to two-time World Team member Tony Ramos, taking the finals in two matches at 57 kg.

Fix won a tight 4-1 bout in the first match before opening it up in the second with 10-3 win, which included an inside trip for four and an immediate gut wrench.

With the win, 2017 Junior World champion Fix punched his ticket to Final X in Lincoln, Neb., on June 9 to take on 2017 Senior World silver medalist Thomas Gilman for the World Team spot at 57 kg. Continue reading at www.teamusa.org
