The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has awarded six $1,000 scholarships this year. Any senior who has wrestled at a Minnesota high school and is college-bound were eligible to apply.
Wayzata’s Swensen signs with South Dakota State
After committing to South Dakota State University earlier this year, Wayzata High state wrestling champion Cael Swensen made it official recently by signing a national letter of intent.
“South Dakota State is building a great program,” Swensen said. “There are seven recruits in my [graduating] class, and five of us are ranked nationally.”
Swensen, who won the state title at 138 points last season, is not the only Minnesotan headed for South Dakota State. In addition to Swensen, who had a 52-1 record in 2019-20, the Jackrabbits have signed Forest Lake’s two-time state champion Derrick Cardinal (47-0 at 126 pounds last season) and Stillwater’s state champion Roman Rogotzke (46-4 at 182 pounds). Wayzata wrestlers waiting for off-season opportunities
April, May and June are usually off-season wrestling months for the grapplers from Wayzata High School, but the COVID-19 situation has put the Trojan wrestlers in lock-down mode.
“We’re not alone,” Wayzata head coach Eric Swensen said last week. “No school in the state has its guys working out.”
That is not to say the Trojans are idle, however. They can’t get on the mats yet, but state 138-pound champion Cael Swensen has been leading outdoor conditioning. One of his favorite training regimens is running the bleacher stairs on the home side at Wayzata High Stadium.
“When will we be able to start? That’s the million-dollar question,” Eric Swensen said. “This is the longest my kids [Cael and younger brother Logan] have ever been away from the mat. It is super frustrating for them and for our other boys.” Continue reading at hometownsource.com
