OSLO, Norway – The U.S. women’s wrestling program closed out a memorable Senior World Championships with two more medals, including a spectacular performance by the legendary Helen Maroulis to win her third career World title, and a strong second place finish as a team.

Maroulis, a 2016 Olympic champion and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, added a 2021 World title to her 1995 and 1995 World titles, with a pin over Anshu of India in the 57 kg finals

Maroulis went into the break trailing a 1-0 match to Anshu on an activity clock point but wasted no time in the second period. OSLO, Norway – Two-time Olympian Ben Provisor has been pulled back into Friday’s repechage at 82 kg in Greco-Roman at the Senior World Championships.

Provisor, the No. 2 seed, won his opening bout over Satoki Mukai of Japan, 2-1. His quarterfinal loss came to Burhan Akbudak of Turkey in an 8-0 technical fall.

Akbudak reached tonight’s semifinals, where he defeated Pejman Poshtam of Iran to qualify for the gold-medal finals. Only losers to a finalist are eligible for repechage, and Provisor has been pulled back in. Continue reading at teamusa.org →

OSLO, Norway – The United States won three medals during the Group Two medal session at the Senior World Championships on Wednesday. But one of those medals will be remembered for a long, long time.

History was made in the final match of the night when U.S. superstar Adeline Gray won her U.S. record sixth Senior World gold medal. Coming from behind to take over the match and score a last-second pin over two-time World medalist Epp Maee of Estonia, Gary raised the bar for American wrestling one more time.

Gray’s finals match was full of excitement. Maee controlled the match early and took plenty of momentum into the break, where she was winning 4-0 after an activity clock point against Gray, plus a late-period takedown which the USA challenged and lost. Continue reading at teamusa.org →

OSLO, Norway – 2016 Olympic champion and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Helen Maroulis showed grit and persistence in winning her semifinals match at 57 kg and earning a spot in the gold-medal match at the Senior World Championships on Wednesday.

Maroulis, who came in as the No. 4 seed at 57 kg, faced a talented young star, 2019 U23 World champion and two-time Junior World champion Sae Nanjo of Japan in the semifinals. After falling behind in the first period, Maroulis emerged with a hard-fought 6-4 victory.

Maroulis was leading a 1-0 match after a shot clock point, but Nanjo was able to score a four-point takedown at the edge of the mat with under a minute to go in the first period to make the score 4-1. Maroulis found momentum going into the break however, scoring a counter takedown to get the match to within a point after three minutes. Continue reading at xxx →

OSLO, Norway – Three U.S. women wrestlers from Group Two have advanced to the semifinals at the Senior World Championships on Wednesday morning, and all will compete against opponents from world powerhouse Japan in their next match.

2020 Olympic champion and 2019 World champion Tamyra Mensah Stock, seeded No. 1, won her only match of the session, an 8-0 victory over Anastasia Lavenchuk of Ukraine. Mensah Stock scored four takedowns in the match and was never in danger of allowing any points.

Mensah Stock will battle Rin Miyaji of Japan.in Wednesday night’s semifinals. Miyaji, who won the 2021 All-Japan Invitational, was second in the 2020 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix. Continue reading at teamusa.org →

OSLO, Norway – The U.S. won its first two medals in the women’s freestyle division at the Senior World Championships on Tuesday, with Kayla Miracle claiming a silver medal at 62 kg and Jenna Burkert adding a bronze medal at 55 kg. It was their first career Senior World medals for both U.S. women. There were only two women’s weight classes contested in Group One.

Miracle was defeated in the finals by 2019 World champion and 2020 Olympic silver medalist Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan, 7-0.

Miracle and Tynybekova wrestled a relatively even and back-and-forth first period, as Tynybekova had a 1-0 lead at the break courtesy of a shot clock point. The most action in the match came in the first minute of the second period, when the two wrestlers entered into a scramble after a shot by Miracle. Tynybekova was able to maneuver in the position and expose Miracle for two points, a call that was challenged but confirmed. That gave Tynybekova a 4-0 lead, one that would prove to be enough. She posted a step out and then a late go-behind takedown to complete the 7-0 win over Miracle. Continue reading at teamusa.org →
