NDSU’s Hayden Zillmer Named WWC Wrestler of the Week

OREM, Utah — For the second time on the season, North Dakota State University 184-pound junior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Crosby HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Monday by the league.

Zillmer upset the nation’s top-ranked wrestler to place third at the 33rd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday, Dec. 6. Zillmer defeated No. 1 Gabe Dean of Cornell by the score of 8-3 in the third-place match.

It was his second OT loss to Stauffer this season. However, the Bison junior rebounded with a 2-1 win over 15th-ranked Brett Pfarr of Minnesota to reach the third-place bout. It was Zillmer’s second win over Pfarr this year.

The NDSU 184-pounder won three matches on Friday to extend his winning streak to 11 and advance to the semis. Zillmer opened the tournament with a 9-3 decision over Bucknell’s Tom Sleigh. He then recorded a takedown with less than 10-seconds left to record a 4-3 win over Iowa State’s 18th-ranked Lelund Weatherspoon. Zillmer closed out Friday with a 6-1 decision over West Virginia’s Jakob Scheffel, who upset sixth-ranked Kenny Courts of Ohio State in the previous round.
