Three Mavericks Place At RCTC Yellowjacket Open

Rochester, Minn. — Minnesota State finished Saturday’s RCTC Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, Minn. with three wrestlers placing in top-five positions in their weight classes.

Kyle Rathman (Fr., 149 lbs.)(Unattached) finished in a podium position Saturday, compiling a 3-1 record, and finishing second at 149. Ratham reached the championship match by winning his first three matches. Rathman pinned his first opponent in 3:50, and won by a 13-5 major decision in his second match. A 10-6 decision over David Dudych (UW-Eau Claire) in the semifinals would guarantee Rathman a second place finish. Rathman was defeated by Sam Wenzel (Wisconsin La Crosse) by a narrow 3-1 decision in the first place match for his only loss of the tournament.

manklogoTrevor Turriff (Fr., 174 lbs.)(Unattached) took second place at the 174 weight class, finishing 3-1 on the day. Turiff won his first match with a fall in 4:02, and his second by a 9-7 sudden victory decision. Turiff downed his semifinal opponent with an 18-1 technical fall to reach the championship match. Turiff was pitted against Ben Kelvington (Augustan) in the finals, coming up short in the match, dropping a 9-5 decision.

Kolbe O’Brien (Fr., 141 lbs.)(Unattached) completed the tournament with a 5-1 record, good for fifth place at 141 pounds. The South Eglin, Ill. native dropped his first match of the day and wrestled through the consolation bracket for a spot in the fifth place match. O’Brien defeated Chase Seaney of Upper Iowa by a 7-1 decision to secure a top-five finish.

The Mavericks will next travel to Decorah, Iowa for the Luther Open on Nov. 11.
